American reporter Steve Martin, on his way to Cairo for an assignment, has a stop over in Tokyo. During the layover, he decides to visit his old friend Dr. Daisuke Serizawa. However, the night before he landed, his plane passed over an area where a ship suddenly exploded and caught fire killing all hands. Martin is then questioned by the authorities and he tells them he saw nothing. After seven more ships suddenly disappear, Martin decides to stay in Japan to see what is going on. He and policeman Tomo Iwanaga then go to Odo Island, which is close to where many of the ships were destroyed. While there, they are caught in a typhoon and during the storm something comes ashore and kills several of the inhabitants and destroys several buildings. A few days later a scientific expedition led by paleontologist Dr. Kyohei Yamane arrives on the island and they are horrified to find a giant monster the natives call Godzilla. Now Japan and the world wait to see what horrors this monster will bring.
When American reporter Steve Martin investigates a series of mysterious disasters off the coast of Japan, he comes face to face with an ancient creature so powerful and so terrifying, it can reduce Tokyo to a smoldering graveyard. Nuclear weapon testing resurrected this relic from the Jurassic age, and now it's rampaging across Japan. At night, Godzilla wades through Tokyo leaving death and destruction in his wake, disappearing into Tokyo Bay when his rage subsides. Coventional weapons are useless against him; but renowned scientist Dr. Serizawa has discovered a weapon that could destroy all life in the bay -- including Godzilla. But which disaster is worse, Godzilla's fury, or the death of Tokyo Bay?
Godzilla King of the Monsters is a truly amazing film. Results from nuclear testing and prehistoric dinosaurs combine in this film and the result is the greatest movie monster ever.
This is the most horror film type of all the Godzilla films. When Godzilla appears he evokes terror and amazement at the same time. The scene of Godzilla popping his head up over the top of the island is a classic moment in Godzilla history as it is his first appearance on screen.
As Godzilla goes through Tokyo destroying everything in his path it is breathtaking. This is how city destruction scenes should be done. Nothing stops Godzilla, everything is at his mercy.
This is what started the Godzilla series. After this other films starring GOdzilla were made and one of the most successful series ever was under way.
Not much to say really. This film speaks for itself. A great monster film and one of the greatest and most significant movies ever made.
I don't know exactly why the Americans so many times had to make different, Americanized versions of the original Japanese Monsters Movies in the 50's and 60's. It's without doubt a bad choice, and the original is so much better. I feel sorry for the American viewers, who had to stick with this version in theaters and on DVD. The good (and somewhat tragic) story in the original movie is broken totally into pieces here. Some elements of it remain, but I would say that the original movie is totally destroyed. Instead, they decided to make a movie about an American reporter who happened to be in Japan during the Godzilla attacks. Really boring and uninteresting. The action scenes are the same in both versions, but that doesn't help too much because the movie overall is worse.
