The 1942 battles of the Coral Sea and Midway island are retold through the points of view of both sides. When an audacious US air raid reaches Japan itself, Combined Fleet commander Isoroku Yamamoto orders seaborne invasions of Port Moresby in the southwestern Pacific and of Midway Island near Hawaii, invasions that Yamamoto hopes will smoke out the US Pacific Fleet for destruction before the full might of US war production can kick in. The Japanese are supremely confident of victory over the vastly outnumbered US fleet, but they are unaware that US Navy intelligence has cracked the Imperial Navy's codes, allowing the US to deploy aircraft carriers to maximum counteroffensive effect.
The summer of 1942 brought Naval stalemate to the Pacific as the American and Japanese fleets stood at even numbers each waiting for the other to begin a renewed offensive. "Midway" tells the story of this historic June battle where a Japanese carrier force, in an attempt to occupy Midway island and lure the American fleet to destruction, was meet valiently by US forces operating off of three aircraft carriers and numerous escort ships. It was the first battle in which naval air power was extensivly used, and at its conclusion the Japanese Carrier force had been completly destroyed which lead the way for the US 1943 and 44 offensives which would eventually bring the Pacific War to a close.
I loved this movie as a child but after seeing it for the first time as an adult I have to sat it is almost unwatchable. I am fortunate to be familiar with the battle of Midway and it's a good thing that I am because otherwise I would have been totally confused by the terrible editing of the film. It is also hard to take the movie seriously when they use aircraft carriers that were clearly from the post WW2 era. The love story doesn't help matters either. Watch a good documentary on the History Channel instead.
This film tells the story of the famous Midway battle from the viewpoint of both the Japanese and Americans. This being a Hollywood film, the Americans naturally get the lion's share of the treatment. the Japanese are shown only in their military capacities, the American have their back stories fleshed out. Surprisingly this does not play to the Americans' advantage. Too much time is spent on exploring Charlton Heston's relationship which his son. A potentially interesting situation of the son being engaged to an imprisoned Japanese girl is squandered by cliché ridden soap opera writing. So too is Heston's overwrought and unconvincing attempts to get her released. It is at odds with the authenticity sought elsewhere, with major participants names appearing under them when they appear and actual war footage inter-cut into the film. Still more time is wasted on wheeling out old stars for brief appearance. This film is of the type, popular in the 70s, with an all-star cast. Unfortunately there is very little for most of them to do except accept their pay checks and phone in a performance.
The hit Universal movie, Midway, opened in Chicago on Friday, June 18, 1976, in the Loop at the United Artists theatre, and four other area cinemas. An ad read: "In Sensurround--the sights, sounds and actual sensations of combat. So real you can feel it!" In Technicolor and Panavision, Rated PG
