The robbery is connected to the thugs running drugs, as the partners discover when they search for the card. Will Paul be a cuckold and Jimmy upstaged at his daughter's wedding?Cop Out stars Tracy Morgan & Bruce Willis as Paul and Jim, two cops who just hit their 9-year cop partnership. During undercover work, Poh Boy (Guillerma Diaz), a vicious baseball fan gets away. Later, Jim is selling a baseball card when an obnoxious robber named Dave (Seann William Scott) robs the store. Jim needs to sell his valuable card Dave took in order to pay for his daughter Ava (Michelle Trachtenberg)'s wedding. It ends up Dave sold the card to Poh Boy. Now, Poh Boy offers Jim and Paul the card under one condition-bring back his stolen car. Of course, Jim and Paul can't shoot him, because he has a whole vicious gang. The bad guys are excellent, creepy, violent, and they keep you guessing. The movie has a couple laughs. If you want an overall amount of laughs it has maybe 4-5 laughs. Seann William Scott earns about 3 of those with his hysterically obnoxious behavior, and Tracy Morgan earns 1-2 of them for those rare moments when he changes from just one of the mostly dull characters to the character he portrayed so greatly on 30 Rock. That said, other funny people I have not mentioned are Jason Lee, Rashida Jones, Kevin Pollak, and Adam Brody, and it is directed by the incredibly talented Kevin Smith. Considering the cast, I had high hopes for it. Overall, while Cop-Out ends up being a bad, if sometimes entertaining, but mostly bad film, this cast keeps you watching. I do not suggest you see this in the theater. However, if you do see it in the theater, and do have the same feelings I do, then, like me, you probably will have this in your DVD collection when it comes out because just like me, you probably will want to watch it to get a couple of laughs, and be distracted for 90 minutes.'Cop Out' is perhaps Kevin Smith's most 'un-Kevin Smith' film. It lacks the brand of humour his previous works had. Even though he has made his share of bad films next to a few great ones, the jokes usually work. In 'Cop Out' most of them fall flat. The story (if there is one) has no direction at all. The characters are annoying. Supporting characters appear and disappear randomly. In Smith's defence, he wasn't part of the writing department (though he was involved in the editing) and the script is just one big mess. I still wonder why he decided to make this? Even the actors seem to lack interest. Tracy Morgan is completely miscast and he has no chemistry with any of his costars. Actually none of the actors have chemistry. Bruce Willis too is unimpressive. Perhaps he's finally tired of playing the same kind of role over and over again. The title is somewhat right for the movie although I don't think it ever had potential.Cop Out is still funnier than the dreadful later Eddie Murphy cop pictures. But it feels like an homage to a period best forgotten.Cop Out is a comedy film written by screenwriting brothers, Mark and Robb Cullen. The screenplay started out as a spec script by Mark and Robb Cullen, so Kevin Smith's writing talent was not needed. He did not do a re-write of the script, despite some reports stating so. In his stand-up TV special "Too Fat for 40" he stated that he was essentially taking a break from writing as he tried to figure out why some of his more recent movies (namely "Zack and Miri Make a Porno") weren't doing as well. He realized his life circumstances had changed from the days of "Clerks" and "Mallrats" and that to try to write a movie like that at this stage of his life wouldn't be honest. He liked the script for "A Couple of Dicks" (the original and working title of "Cop Out") and loved growing up watching buddy cop movies with his dad. Jason Lee, who frequently works with Smith, appears in a brief (two scene) role as the step-father of Jimmy Monroe (Bruce Willis)'s daughter.
