The vicar of a Norman church asks the Avengers' help when a team of archaeologists excavating a site underneath the church are all killed and their bodies rendered completely devoid of any energy. This is due to a little black box which sends out deadly charges of electricity. Furthermore its charges are nurturing a race of thingumajigs, pure energy creatures which will eat anything and must be stopped before they do great harm.
"Thingumajig," like "Fog," is an underrated horror entry, adding a dash of science fiction. An archaeological excavation beneath a 12th century church yields a number of corpses, and the mystery grows when a nearby pond offers up a bevy of dead fish. An atmospheric hybrid with an electrifying climax. The youthful Jeremy Lloyd ("From Venus with Love") is clearly miscast as the Reverend, and would soon join the enemy in America as both writer and performer on LAUGH-IN, whose ratings success put an end to THE AVENGERS. Also featuring Willoughby Goddard ("The Frighteners"), Hugh Manning ("The Thirteenth Hole" and "The Superlative Seven"), John Horsley ("Mr Teddy Bear"), Edward Burnham ("The Fear Merchants"), Vernon Dobtcheff ("Room Without a View" and "The Living Dead"), Russell Waters ("Castle De'ath"), John Moore ("The Hidden Tiger"), and Harry Shacklock ("A Change of Bait," "The Mauritius Penny," "Man-Eater of Surrey Green").
A team of archaeologists are working in tunnels under an old country church. But something else is down there with them. A man hears a fearful slithering sound, moments later he is electrocuted. The Rev. Teddy Shelley ( Jeremy Lloyd ) asks John Steed to investigate. More deaths occur, and a mysterious bearded man named 'Kruger' ( Iain Cuthbertson ) shows up. Dead fish adorn a nearby river. Whatever is causing the deaths is not alone...
Written by Terry Nation, there is more than a touch of 'Dr.Who' to this atmospheric 'Avengers' episode. It is very much like one of Jon Pertwee's 'U.N.I.T.' stories. The 'thing' turns out to be a box capable of independent movement by feeding off electricity, and killing anything or anyone it meets. There are two in all, and they got loose following a car crash. Kruger wants them back so he can mass produce them, and unleash a wave of terrifying deaths all across Britain. Its good to see the brilliant Iain Cuthbertson in this, he excelled at playing larger-than-life characters. Also in the cast are Jeremy Lloyd ( future 'Are You Being Served' co-creator ), Hugh Manning ( a regular in 'Emmerdale Farm' - as it was then known - for many years ), John Horsley ( 'Doc Morrissey' from 'The Fall & Rise Of Reginald Perrin' ), and obese Willoughby Goddard ( from 'The Mind Of J.G. Reeder' ) as a perpetually sneezing eccentric called 'Professor Harvey Truman'.
What lets the episode down is the design of the box - its too ordinary looking to be frightening. But Tara's fight with it in her flat - she short-circuits the thing with champagne - is terrific.
