A British team is sent to cross occupied Greek territory and destroy the massive German gun emplacement that commands a key sea channel.
Two powerful German guns control the seas past the Greek island of Navarone making the evacuation of endangered British troops on a neighboring island impossible. Air attack is useless so a team of six Allied and Greek soldiers is put ashore to meet up with partisans to try and dynamite the guns. The mission is perilous enough anyway but are the Germans on the island getting further help too?.
A beautiful Dmitri Tiomkin score resonates throughout this definitive "allies-out-to-blow-up-the-enemy-stronghold" film. Top actors of their day, in strong performances, play second fiddle to the story itself, which moves the viewer inexorably along to the final assault against "The Guns".
I first saw this film in the theatre at age 11. I've seen it dozens of times since. It's not Ben-Hur, nor even Citizen Kane. It's just my favorite film.
Can honestly say it's one of the top five World War II movies I have even seen and also Gregory Peck's No. 2 film, behind To Kill A Mockingbird. It's not only the action that's fabulous, but the tension among the Allied commandos that keeps us on the edge of our seats. The best scene has Peck chewing out David Niven for giving him all this flak about leaving Anthony Quayle behind, and exhorting Peck to shoot Gia Scala after finding out she's the traitor among them. It's sad that only two main cast members are still alive -- Irene Papas and James Darren. But I don't doubt that Greg, David, Tony, Anthony Quayle, James Robertson Justice, Richard Harris, Stanley Baker and that German officer who later played Russian generals in James Bond movies (Walter Gotell) are putting on a remake in that great movie studio in the sky. Justice has a good bit part as Commander Jensen, the man who sent them on that suicidal mission and so deadpanly told Gregory Peck he'd have to put off his vacation. Justice, famous for looking like Henry VIII, looks like an old publisher I wrote for. Acted like him, too. This is a movie you can take the kids to; there's no foul language and no graphic violence. While I wouldn't like those qualities in a war movie that was made today -- highly unrealistic -- this movie is too good otherwise to be critical of that. A must-see.

Carl Foreman's visit to Hollywood lengthened to almost a week instead of two days as he had planned. That's because he has been negotiating with Cary Grant about playing the lead in h is next picture, "Guns of Navarone."
Carl brought both the book and script to Cary to read, and hopes to get the valuable Grant name on a deal before he joins his wife, who is vacationing in Italy.

The Massive Power Failure that blacked out new York the other day almost caused producer Carl Forman and three top Manhattan movie critics, to black out, too. Foreman was screening his movie, "Guns of Navarone," for the critics. In one of the last scenes of the film, a German officer gives the command to a battery of cannon to fire at the approaching six destroyers in the Navarone channel. The officer gave the command, the cannons boomed--and, presto, everything went black!
