When he meets his friend Ludlow "The Wonder Kid" Lamansoff, he discovers that the aliens have found a time capsule sent by the US Government to the space with a videocassette of videogame and understood that it was a declaration of war. The aliens broadcast a challenge to Earth to play and win a videogame against them; otherwise Earth will be destroyed. Now the last hope on Earth is Brenner, Cooper, Ludlow, Violet and Eddie.Three world record video gamers - Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler) the "Pac-Man" champ, Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad) the "Centipede" champ, and Eddie Plant (Peter Dinklage) the "Donkey Kong" champ - combine forces to stop an extraterrestrial life force who took a message the wrong way when we broadcasted video game tournaments which extended to the far reaches of outer space.Despite all the negative reception I've heard from every type of movie critics, I still went to see Pixels, prepared to face the possible amount of awfulness I would give.
So I bought my ticket, pick some snacks and entered the theater room to see the movie. AND IT WAS...
Okay.
Just, okay.
Far to be great but far to be terrible either.
Have you seen Independence Day? Well, that's the same thing but with video games. The character interactions are awkward and kinda bland, the characters themselves are just stereotypes, but it's compensated with great action scenes and special effects.
Really, the action scenes are the highlight of the whole film ! Taking those simple arcade games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede and turn them into some epic and exciting scenes, you really can't go wrong !
It's actually the very first time I ever see Adam Sandler (starring as Sam Brenner) in a live-action movie. I didn't see any of his movies, but I knew I won't be dealing with a performance that's Academy Award-worthy. Not very expressive but not totally uninterested by the situation. It's the typical "funny jerk" guy. Keep in mind I said it in quote.
Speaking of the comedy, I certainly won't recall it the funniest of cinema's history but it's surprisingly decent compared from what I heard about the other productions of Happy Madison. Not a single trace of toilet humor. And I will admit that I found few of the lines kinda clever. Oh, and Peter Dinklage's character (Eddie Plant) is a lot of fun to watch, you can't go wrong with them. The only thing I found embarrassing to watch are the moments with Josh Gad's character (never catch his name through the whole movie), proving that screaming your lines out loud doesn't make them funny. But still, nothing unwatchable.
Also, I want to notice that even through there's a lot of references of 80's video games, that's MOST of the references that you will see. The rest of the references is from 80's culture in general. So if you're like me, born in the late 90's, you'll probably won't get them.
I also want to notice that because it's distributed by Sony Pictures, there's a LOT of product placements for Sony products. They even mention the PlayStation 4 and show The Last of Us in one scene.
Bottom line, from my opinion, it's not the giant pile of unwatchable awfulness that everybody is making up to be. It's just a mindless pop-corn movie. Exactly like I predicted it.
