After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, but lacking in heroic skills.
Frank Darrbo is a hapless fry cook. When his wife Sarah falls off the wagon and dumps him for Jacques, a drug dealer, Frank tries to get her back by reporting her kidnapped, grabbing her from Jacques' car, and wailing for her to return. After watching Christian TV and having a vision, he becomes a superhero to fight evil. He sews a costume, finds a weapon (a pipe wrench) and looks for crimes to stop. He has problems: his wrench inflicts real injury, so the cops want him for being a vigilante, his sense of boundaries is flawed, and Jacques' gang has guns. Libby, a clerk at a comic book store, becomes his sidekick, and it's time to go save Sarah. What chance do they have?

Life-long loser and all-around weird guy Frank (Rainn Wilson), loses his wife (Liv Tyler) to a slimy drug pusher (Kevin Bacon) and the life of drugs he though she had left long ago. He also loses what's left of his sanity. Thinking that God has a special purpose for him, he becomes The Crimson Bolt. A wrench-wielding "hero", quick to punish child molesters and people who cut in line, alike. He's joined by Libby (Ellen Page), a volatile young woman who works at a local comic book shop. Together, the duo sets out to crush local crime and get Frank's wife back.
The comparisons between Super and Kick-Ass are obvious. Both are dark comedies about DIY superheroes, but Super is the darker and less comedic of the two, while Kick-Ass is more stylish and funnier. The main characters, played by Wilson and Page, are clearly disturbed, abnormal individuals that have no problems using massively excessive violence to fight crimes both big and small. They both do a great job (as does Bacon, though Tyler only has a very minor part), and Page especially seems to revel in her character's enthusiasm for punishing evil.
I liked Super, but I hesitate to give it a general recommendation. The combination of absurdist humor, bleakness, and unapologetic violence could make it a tough pill to swallow for general audiences. Don't hesitate to check it out if you're interested, just be aware of what you're getting into.
Some have considered this movie to be among the greatest superhero movies ever made. I wouldn't say so, films like Spider Man 2, Watchmen and The Dark Knight are clearly superior in my mind. Overall, this is a very good flick about the real absurdity of the concept of superhero, a deconstruction of the concept of superhero. In that regard the movie performs really well as it manages to show clearly how ludicrous it would be for people to dress as superheroes and try to fight crime in the real world.
Overall, it is a must see for fans of action/comic book films but not a must see for those who like more sophisticated films.
Super is occasionally brilliant, sometimes awful and terribly confusing overall.
