Nick Walker, a narcotics detective with the Boston Police Department, has just been killed in the line of duty. Rather than face judgment to determine his final resting place, Nick is recruited by Chief Mildred Proctor into the Rest in Peace Department (R.I.P.D.). Part of the reason for he ending up in this limbo of sorts is that on Earth, he and his partner, Detective Bobby Hayes, in the process of a drug raid, found a stash of gold pieces, which they took for themselves, Nick doing it solely in the want to make a better life for his wife, Julia. The limbo is also despite Nick, before his death, feeling remorse for this action and vowing to turn in his share of the gold, in the process not turning in Bobby. The mandate of the R.I.P.D. is to go back to Earth to find and destroy deados - dead people who have been able to evade judgment and are now back in human form among the living on Earth - so that they will face that judgment, ultimately sending them "down there" as their final resting place. Initially, Nick, learning that he will be going back to Boston, expects that he will be able to reunite with Julia and avenge his death in this job, that is until he learns that R.I.P.D. members are given new appearances and thus new identities. Nick is partnered with Roy Pulsipher, a longtime R.I.P.D. member who was a southern US Marshal during the Civil War era in his life on Earth. Judgmental Roy, who is not told of Nick's criminal actions, hopes to be able to retire soon to go to his final resting place. In the process of their work, they will discover that the gold pieces have a higher more nefarious purpose which, if in the wrong hands, could spell the end of life on Earth as it is known. As such, Nick tries to do this work while attending to his own initial goals of avenging his death and reuniting with Julia, which may not be easy considering the role of the gold pieces and with Roy and Proctor constantly looking over his dead shoulder.
A recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him.
I went into this film with the expectation that it was going to be bad, well, to be honest, I expected it to be dreadful.
On more than one occasion, I've heard people say that they did not like this film, for one reason or another. But, now that I've sat down and watched it, I cannot for the life of me understand why.
Yes, it did contain a few Clichés (I'm not going to mention any, because of spoilers) and yes, some of the scenes may have been a bit predictable. But this film contained one of the most interesting concepts that I've seen in recent cinema, not to mention some pretty spectacular cinematography.
So yeah. This film was far better than I was expecting. Also, Jeff Bridges is perfect for his role, just puttin' that out there.
In RIPD, Boston police officer Nick is burying some gold at night. The next day he tells his partner Hayes that he's got remorse and is going to turn the gold in. They took the gold from a drug dealer during a raid. At first Hayes tries to convince him to change his mind but then he too decides to turn the gold in. During a raid to catch a cop killer/drug dealer Hayes kills Nick telling him he can't let him turn the gold in.
Nick goes to limbo but instead of facing judgment he is recruited to the RIPD to catch "deados"-- dead people that turn into monsters on earth. He's teamed up with Roy a cowboy sheriff from last century. They are given different appearances on earth, Roy of a hot blonde model, Nick of an old Chinese guy. Nick of course wants to see his funeral, his wife and realizes that Hayes is getting close to her. Our team goes after some deados and Hayes has some dealings with them. He dug up Nick's gold and gave it to a deado. Turns out the gold is being used to create a staff that will reverse the vortex that sucks up souls, dumping the dead instead back on earth. Even though Nick and Roy are officially off the case, they keep investigating. But Hayes was smarter. He got a bunch of deados to limbo and stole the gold they had in evidence, brings it back to earth and starts reversing the vortex. Nick and Roy have to rush back to earth and battle an army of armed deados and the catastrophe the staff is causing that is destroying buildings everywhere.
RIPD is one of the more reviled films of the year for some reason. Critics compare it to some more made more than 10 years ago as if we didn't know that Hollywood only has 5 or 6 stories that it keeps recycling. They complain even about the acting by the rather impressive cast (Reynolds, Bridges, Bacon, Parker). Not quite sure how things work in Hollywood but it looks like someone decides what movie will make it and which one won't and the critics follows suit glorifying crappy movies and trashing decent movies. Some of the critics' reviews read as if the writer hasn't even seen this movie.
RIPD is obviously no masterpiece. It's a mild PG-13 action comedy for young teens. It has some problems- the most of the deados are just big fat CGI people running around tipping everything over they run into. Most of the action is alright actually, we get the usual cars falling from the sky and buildings turned to dust, but some of the action involving the giant deados is too cartoonish, which goes to show that spending hundreds of millions on CGI sometimes doesn't pay off. The story is good and so is the acting, but Bridges character does get to talk way to much which can be annoying since he sounds like he's talking from a dentist chair and his mouth has been filled with cotton balls. Apparently even the writers were annoyed by this and they have Nick bitterly complaining to Roy to shut up for once. RIPD is decent fun for teens.
The whole thing seems ill-conceived from the start, unable to keep its parameters simple – think of Ghostbusters and “Don’t cross the streams!" – but also lacking any genuine comic spark or imagination. It’s an exhausting 98 minute ride to nowhere.
