Set in the ghettos of Paris in 2010, an undercover cop and ex-thug try to infiltrate a gang in order to defuse a neutron bomb.
In 2010, the dangerous districts in the periphery of Paris are surrounded by walls, and the dwellers do not have school, hospital and even police in the area, which are ruled by drug lords. In the 13th District, Leito is a honest man that lives in a clean building and does not permit drug dealers nearby his neighborhood. When he destroys one million Euros in heroin of Taha Bemamud, the criminal abducts Leito's sister Lola and the corrupt police arrests Leito. Six months later, the tough and honest Capt. Damien Tomaso is assigned to find and deactivate a stolen bomb that might destroy the 13th District and the two million dwellers. Together with Leito, they have to face the gang of Taha and disclose a despicable secret behind the robbery of the bomb.
French Adrenalin. With incredible Parkour stunts and one of the main characters played by David Belle, considered by many the founder and leading pioneer of Parkour, "District B13" delivers what you can ask from a good action-thriller - and more. This is the film that brought French director Pierre Morel to Hollywood (he later directed the very successful and popular "Taken"). "District B13" is warmly recommended to everyone who wants to enjoy some nice action with a fresh touch.
This is probably one of the biggest wastes of celluloid for 2005. Though the film runs only a scant 72 or 73 minutes minus end credits this film feels like an eternity.
Set in 2020 the film is set in a Paris thats had its bad neighborhoods walled off from the rest of the city (don't think about it it makes no sense). The main plot, which doesn't kick in until about half way through the running time has a good hearted criminal teaming up with a cop to stop a stolen atomic bomb from going off, since it was designed so that if its tampered with it goes off. Oh course you know its been tampered with and its due to go off in a matter of hours.
Illogical? Yup. Most of this movie makes no sense. Almost everything about this movie makes zero sense. If the movie is 70 minutes long, why spend half of it just doing character introduction? Why are parts of the walled city beautiful and parts run down? Why cut services yet give police protection? I've got about 900 questions about the world the film is in, never mind the character motivations. (A few questions on that subject...Why does Lola try to start a fire? Where are Leito's men? Why does the bad guy suddenly turn into a coke fiend?) Its bad the attempt at a plot is just awful and would put Ed Wood to shame.
On the other hand there are some kick ass characters and performances. The two male leads are fantastic. The character of Lola and the girl who plays her have for ever erased Natalie Portman in my mind as the kick ass teen of all time. I only wish that Luc Besson and his team had come up with something for them to do that wasn't yawn inducing.
The film also has some incredible action sequences (mostly in the the first 20 minutes). Most of them are hand to hand and are absolutely dynamite. They are wonderfully spectacular and "WOW" inducing. The problem is that they get lost since there is nothing to connect them to each other.Time and time again as I said "WOW" I had the additional feeling that this would be so much better if this wasn't happening in a vacuum.
If you must see this wait for cable.
It may be subtitled, and the faces may be unfamiliar, but District B13 is the best buddy action movie around.
