Book descriptionThe third volume of Philip Foners massive labor history is concerned with the actions of the American Federation of Labor from 1900-1909. Foner is an able writer, though I dont think youd describe this book as riveting, even if you are very much interested in the subject, as I am.Foners left politics do shine through on occasion. He is critical of Samuel Gompers throughout, especially on the AFLs reluctance to move away from craft unionism and toward industrial unionism, as well as exclusionary policies that were perpetuated toward minorities and women that wished to join the labor movement. Foner is equally critical toward anarchists who he doesnt seem to believe could be organized enough to lead a strong labor movement.The chief benefit of Foners series is simply that he takes the time to go into great deal detail, where most shorter histories simply do not have the luxury of spending so much time on the minutia, even if those minutia may accrue over time to have significant meaning. Foners series is a great resource for those of us wishing to develop a deeper baseline knowledge of the major struggles and milestones within the labor movement in its most vital decades.
