Professional Brooklyn hitman Jimmy Conlon is more commonly known as THE GRAVEDIGGER. Jimmy was a mob hit-man, who was best friends with his boss Sean Maguire. But when Jimmy's son, Michael, is marked for death by the mob, Jimmy must go up against Sean to protect Michael at all costs. Together, he and Michael must avoid corrupt cops, contract killers and the mob to survive the night.
In New York, the decadent alcoholic Jimmy Conlon is the former hit man known as Gravedigger. Jimmy is a lonely man and his only friend is the mobster Sean Maguire that was also his boss. Jimmy's estranged son Mike Conlon is a former boxer that works as limousine driver and is married with children. Sean's son Danny Maguire is an ambitious troublemaker. On the Christmas Day, Danny deals with Albanian drug dealers but Sean refuses to participate. Danny schedules a meeting with the men at home to give the money he had received back. Mike coincidently drives the two Albanian in the limousine and Danny kills them in his house. Then he hunts Mike down since he does not want eyewitnesses for what he did. Jimmy goes to Mike's house and saves his life killing Danny. Now Sean seeks revenge and puts a contract on Jimmy and Mike that are hunted down along the night by the mobsters, the hired hit man and the corrupt police officers. Sean does not want a deal and Jimmy's only chance to protect Mike and his family is the support of the honest Detective Harding that has been on his tail for many years.
Liam neeson is back for another old man action film and this is the best one since the first taken film. The premise of the film sees a mob boss and a mobster going after each other because of a personal altercation. Liam neeson is really good in this film and really back on a role. His character was cool but you can see just how damaged he was and I liked the relationships he had with the other characters. Ed harris was really good in this film too and I enjoyed his chemistry with neeson and he was a good bad guy. Joel kinnamon was also good playing neesons son and I thought they worked well together in this film and was a real highlight. Common plays a hit-man going after the heroes and even though you learn nothing about him he is a fun addition to the film. Vincent donofrio is a great actor and he is good as the cop in this film. The story has a good emotional quality to it with the father-son relationship and the childhood friendship providing allot of good moments. However, the film does become a bit convoluted and it drags out a bit. The script has good drama in it, but it does lack a bit of humour that could have added more of that fun to the film. The style has some good action in it especially using tension well. However, this film is a bit long and could have been shorter that would have provably improved the film. Overall this is a decent action film that is worth a watch.
RUN ALL NIGHT (2015) ***1/2 Liam Neeson, Ed Harris, Joel Kinnaman, Boyd Holbrook, Bruce McGill, Genesis Rodriguez, Vincent D'Onofrio, Common, Lois Smith, Patricia Kalember (Unbilled cameo: Nick Nolte) Old school gangster film-of-sorts with Neeson in top form as a drunken washed up hit-man whose estranged son (Kinnaman) runs afoul of his boss and lifelong friend Harris in a sins-of-the-father/honor-among-thieves vengeance actioner set on one night in neo noir Manhattan. Lean and taut screenplay by Brad Ingelsby and fluid direction by Jaume Collet-Serra keeps things lively in a predictable yet entertaining genre piece thanks largely to skillful acting by its leads Neeson with his best world-weary flinty resolve and Harris as a reptilian eyed villain with nary a flinch at the bloodshed and body counts amounting in the wake of an eye for an eye.
Even though he never gets a grip on the over-complicated plot, the director hasn’t lost his knack for those elemental qualities that make a good action flick.
