The US Treasury Department is searching for a man who is the accountant to several global crime figures. They know him simply as The Accountant. The man himself is living a fairly inconspicuous existence as a practicing accountant. He is hired by Living Robotics, a tech firm, to go through their accounts after a junior accountant found some abnormalities. What he finds makes him a marked man.
Christian Wolff is an efficient accountant that is usually hired to find financial deceptions and embezzlement for criminal organizations. His point of contact is a woman's voice by phone and the means of payment are sometimes valuable paintings or gold bars instead of money. Christian was an autistic child that received a rigid military training with his brother Braxton from their paranoid military father. The director of the Treasure Department Raymond "Ray" Kinghas been unsuccessfully hunting The Accountant for a long period and he blackmails the efficient analyst Marybeth Medina to identify who he is before his retirement. When the accountant, Dana Cummings, finds an embezzlement of 61 million-dollars in the Living Robotics, Christian is hired to audit the company by the owner Lamar Blackburn and his sister Rita Blackburn. The financial director Ed Chilton tells that Dana committed a mistake but soon Christian checks the books and confirms the embezzlement. During the night, Chilton is murdered as if he had committed suicide and Lamar finishes the audit affecting Christian that have not finished his work. Soon Dana and Chris are hunted down by hitmen and Christian protects her. Meanwhile Medina finds his true identity and Christian is hunted by Ray and the FBI. Who might be the person behind the embezzlement?
My wife was so excited when we saw the trailer for "The Accountant" ("Finally, we're not nerds anymore!"). It went a long way toward selling Ben Affleck's math savant by day, ripped vigilante by night. That's some serious B-movie potential right there.
The actual movie doesn't live up to that promise, primarily because it's juggling all manner of subplots divergent from that main hook. Subplots involving J.K. Simmons' low-rent Treasury agent, a tech firm's corruption angle and a forbidden romance with Anna Kendrick. It's kind of all over the road.
You've gotta give Affleck credit for hurling himself into this; he really brings to life an autistic character, even making it somehow believable that this guy can be a badass. And it's a lot of fun when he goes to work, moving directly into Batman beatdowns and John Wick head shots. The downside is that the fun isn't consistent.

Ben Afflek is a perfectly screen friendly face/body to carry this, just short of pure fiction, modern day white-hat/black-hat thriller where we are not sure which colour our 'hero' is wearing. He's apparently somewhere on the autistic scale, although, so much of the dialogue and setups require our hero to have significant emotional insight of the people he deals with....just the thing those autistic spectrum people don't have. This aside, this is an engaging and fast moving crime thriller. Lots of shoot-outs, lots of jeopardy, mystery and all the rest. In the end however, there seems to be no real reason for all of it. All we learn at the end is that it is a family affair.
The Accountant tallies up its numbers for an achingly long 50 minutes before it starts to finally piece together any semblance of a structured plot.
