The story begins with a normal, bumbling everyday watchdog beagle named Shoeshine who gets exposed to a substance that gives him the powers of a superhero. And not to mention the ability the speak during an accident. He is adopted by a security guard - an ex-cop, who's a widower with a 12-year-old moody son, Jack Unger. Shoeshine uses his superpower to protect his love and the citizens of Capitol City from the evil Simon Barsinister. Underdog dedicates himself to good, quickly becoming revered as a superhero, but ultimately it will take the combined efforts and understanding of Underdog, Jack, Dan, Molly, and Polly to defeat Barsinister and save Capital City from destruction.
A Beagle must use his newly-bestowed superpowers to defend Capitol City from mad scientist Simon Barsinister.
God, I never felt so insulted in my whole life than with this crap. There are so many ways to describe this piece of crap, that I think that if I said everything that came to mind, I would get banned by this site.
How do I begin? Well, for one, it doesn't take knowledge of the original series to know that this movie is a slap to the face of people who've seen it. The biggest butchering of a theme song ever made is here, from a metal version, to a freaking RAP VERSION, what were they thinking? How does Underdog and a electronic-heavy musical style match? The story is so basic, that I will do something I don't usually do and not even give a summary. Just think this: A dog gets superpowers, fill in the rest. That's how predictable this movie is. And then comes the jokes....please kill me now. This style of humor that might not even get the kids laughing, it's that bad, well, expect that punch line after the sneezing. That was slightly funny.
But what surprises me the most is why Jason Lee(Ny Name Is Earl), Patrick Warburton(Emperor's New Groove), and Jim Belushi(According to Jim) are all here. In the shows/movies I mentioned, the actors, in my opinion, do a good job, and, excluding Lee, are the best actors in this movie, but that says very little. The rest deserve Golden Rasberry nominations for this crap. I am very sad to see such good actors buried by this disaster.
All in all, this is just as bad as Doogal, which I reviewed as well, and again, my head would explode if I saw anything worse than this.
I'm not certain were all the bad reviews on this film are coming from. I can only imagine that Die hard fans of the cartoon couldn't transition to live action. This film was loads of fun and I laughed my A$$ off. With maybe a slight change in persona for some of the characters like Bar Sinister, Riff Raff and Polly, and some major improvements on Cad, it was a good representation of taking a cartoon character to the big screen. Everyone in the theater from children to adults, liked the film. My only negs where I liked the old Bar Sinister character and maybe he was a little too different for me, also (small spoiler here) I felt Jim Belushi's character should have had more to do in the end sequence. I say if you liked the cartoon, or just like the idea of a talking super hero dog, see the film!!
The TV show was mildly subversive, with humor that children and adults could enjoy on different levels, but the movie strives for a blander, family-oriented middle ground.
