In Paris, a young employee in the office of the US Ambassador hooks up with an American spy looking to stop a terrorist attack in the city.
James Reece is an ambitious aide to the U.S. Ambassador in Paris, doing little jobs for the CIA and hoping to get into black ops. On the night he and his girlfriend, Caroline, become engaged, he's told to pick up Charlie Wax at Orly. Charlie is an unorthodox government employee - large, bald and bearded, foul-mouthed and eccentric. Charlie immediately takes James on a wild ride of murder and mayhem, through ethnic enclaves. As bodies pile up, the purpose remains opaque to James. Caroline, unhappy that James has been out of touch for a day, tells him to bring Charlie for dinner. Charlie can be charming - where will it lead? Does the chess-playing James have what it takes?
Well that will teach me... I normally don't miss anything that features the always cool John Travolta, however i decided to bypass this and yes Mr. Travolta it will not happen again. I loved this movie...plot twists...high octave explosions, cool dialogue and script and loads of guns, and the odd bazooka too. This was the first film i have seen Jonathan Rhys Meyers in and i was impressed with his performance as well. Intelligence officer (meyers) James Reece has been doing some secret ops work on the side from his normal job of working as the aid to the u.s. ambassador of France. In return he hopes to end up in the secret ops business altogether. After hearing from his correspondent he is told to pick up another agent who is having a little bit of trouble in customs. Enter Charlie Wax (Travolta) a smart ass wise cracking agent who although doesn't look the type, is one thing damn good at what he does. The two try their best to work together although its a good learning lesson for James Reece who might not want to fill these shoes after all is said and done. Travolta like Nic Cage never seems to disappoint in my eyes.
What on Earth is going on here? This film contains every cliché, every bit of corny dialogue and every racial stereotype it's possible to squeeze in. Do we really need another gun-toting, "hyper-intelligent", action hero to save us poor hopeless Europeans? At some points in the film there were so many bullets flying our hero would have at least died of lead poisoning should he not have ducked behind flimsy wooden crates. And while we are on the subject of chemistry, there is absolutely none at all between any of the characters. I can't give this one star- there is worse around, but this makes the Die Hard quadrilogy look like a cinematic masterpiece.
Director Luc Besson? Hang your head in shame.
A ''fun trash'' movie that's more trash than fun.
