In Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race who have attacked Earth via our power supply.
Two young American men travel to Moscow to sell their social networking/party locating software. Whilst at a nightclub, they venture outside to see what is believed to be, an Aurora Borealis. However, the light separates and falls from the sky. They discover that the lights are aliens, using the power supply to hunt and kill humans.
OK, I really don't know why people and critics are bashing this movie, but I thoughtfully enjoyed it.
The movie starts as it should, good presentation of the characters and then the invasion, I must say it was brilliantly done, capturing the tension of the moment perfectly.
There are some obvious deaths as you would see but that is to be expected in almost all sci-fi movies lately.
The problem with the movie is not how it begins, but how it ends, see, movie started great, goes very good but up until the 85% it started to slow down up to a point of loosing it's interest. The ending is the real problem with this movie, it feels flat, unfinished and hollow.
Hopefully, the movie is quite good overall and loosing it's touch in the last 30 minutes it's the main problem here.
Aliens are invisible, it's invasion is less "spectacular" than other invasion movies and that's the way the movie is supposed to be so, I have no problems with it.
The actors are OK, they're not great but I don't see them ruining the movie, if I had to blame someone for the last 30 minutes it's the script, it's seems they run out of ideas and tried to finish it quickly.
Overall it's not a bad movie, I had fun which is what counts, people is very rude these days, it seems nobody seems to like nothing that comes out and everybody judge everything, take it easy, enjoy it for what it is.
A nice little sci-fi movie. Doesn't deserve a 4, I give it a 6. Recommended, just don't expect a great ending and you'll be good to go.
After a business deal gone bad, the American friends Sean(who has a lifetime of screwing things up behind him) and Ben(who tends to go by the book) are stuck in Moscow with no real plans. Well, they were already going to go to a nightclub that evening, and so there they meet up with the fellow Westerners of Natalie(who up and left her home on a whim) and Anne(who's very social and relaxed). After a little(and appropriate) amount of time spent with us getting to know them and their interpersonal relationships being set up, aliens begin invading(and the massive tension doesn't let up from this point on, only increasing and gluing you to your chair; this is what the ad campaign suggested, rather than an action flick, and it delivers exactly that, as I had hoped, and this is what you should expect going into this). That sounds like a pretty basic genre piece(and it doesn't particularly transcend that), but it is spiced up with a couple of interesting concepts, such as these interlopers being invisible(revealed only by proximity to electrical devices, doing an excellent job of building suspense, you seldom know where they are, how many of them around(we see a ton of them land, in one of the few and always vital outstandingly(the whole thing is filmed well) visually impressive sights. The incredible and not flashy 3D(the FX tend to be amazing) puts us right there with this band of survivors, terrified of what will happen) as well as lethal to touch(there is no physical fighting with these things, you hide, you stay away, you can try to shoot them(albeit we see almost right away after they arrive that bullets do nothing to them), utterly destroying the living form they kill. This leads to bleak, post-apocalyptic visions of empty streets, full of cars with their doors open, and in place of piles of bodies(which would be distractingly shocking, and in immensely poor taste), we have the ash left over from the deaths, blowing in the wind, signifying the end of the human era. We're not only deceased, we are gone. It lends a real air of insurmountable odds to this, present throughout. Also, this takes the consequence of the powerful antagonists... there are sudden and surprising occurrences, including unexpected kills. While I had feared that the characters would be obnoxious, they're actually quite good. Several of them have arcs(sort of, at least), and the point is made that a crisis shows us who we really are(our leads all change, and their dynamic as a group changes, after things go South). Dialog can be pretty... meh, if exposition is handled fine. The acting is dependable, with only a little downright bad to it. This is somewhat mainstream Hollywood(if it is definitely the most intense recent such flick), with "lessons learned", big heroics working out and the like. The foreign setting makes it even more "strange" and difficult to get accustomed to. This keeps to a very nice pace, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. There is a lot of disturbing content(the end of the world and all) and a little moderate language in this(the expected ratio for current PG-13 releases). I recommend this to any fan of this kind of thing, and anyone who wanted an entire movie that's like the flashbacks in the original Terminator). 7/10
This is exactly the sort of film I wasn't expecting from either Gorak or his producers. In many too-obvious ways this is just a formulaic riff on Spielberg's "War of the Worlds."
