An account of the romance between the Maratha general, Baji Rao I and Mastani, princess of Bundelkhand.
Bajirao 1, who fought over 41 major battles and many others, was reputed never to have lost a single one of them. Bajirao is described as "RANMARD" a man made of and for the battlefield. Bajirao said to his brother "Remember that night has nothing to do with sleep. It was created by God, to raid territory held by your enemy. The night is your shield, your screen against the cannons and swords of vastly superior enemy forces. " A born cavalry leader Bajirao was unequaled for the daring and originality of his genius. Mastani, the fabled warrior princess was the daughter of Raja Chattrasal and his Persian wife Roohani Begum. An expert dancer, singer and warrior, Mastani is sent to battle at the head of the Bundelkhand army. A chance meeting on a war field where they fight on the same side, puts Bajirao and Mastani on a course of passionate love- that is unstoppable by either of their families, by war or by death itself.
I had gone to watch the movie with high expectations as I am a fan of Sanjay Leela BhansalI and had loved all of his previous works, except Sawwariya. I expected the movie to be of the same class as SLB's last Ram Leela. But it was not the case. Before the interval, I got bored as hell. Except for a few scenes the movie is good for nothing. I, seriously have no clue why there is so much hype about the movie. I don't know when was the last time I got that bored. I am not going to forgive the movie makers even if they return the money of my ticket. I advice all to avoid the movie. Even if you are going, do not go with much expectations. A big disappointment, it was. One word: Disastrous.
If Jodha Akbar and Devdas had a baby, it would be this movie. Truly excellent from start to finish. From the very first song, I got Mughal- e-Azam feels, which is a true classic that is difficult to beat.
On the cast... when I came across the song, "Deewani Mastani", on YouTube, I was enchanted by Deepika's beauty, an actress I do not normally enjoy seeing on-screen. After watching the movie today, I can say that Deepika honestly radiates throughout it all. She has never looked better. Priyanka Chopra is also someone I am not a huge fan of, but she did a great job in delivering many of the emotional scenes and played her character very well. Then, Ranveer Singh, beyond being just total eye candy, did an AMAZING job in his role too. He was a sincere, confident solider and his acting in the ending scenes is one that will make your heart throb.
Everyone was on their A game. The choreography, the songs, the colors, the setting, the story line -- everything is just so worth it. I feel like after a long time I have watched a true Indian movie. There have been many good ones of course like P.K. and Bajraangi Baijaan but Bajirao Mastani brought the majestic grace of Indian cinema to the screens since arguably Devdas. I would definitely watch it again and recommend to anyone interested in seeing it. Good job to all of the crew!
