The not so smart Dwayne intends to open a massage parlor with his partner Travis, but he does not have money for the investment. He decides to hire a hit-man to kill his father, The Major, who won a large amount of money in the lottery years ago, but the killer demands US$ 100,000 for the job. Dwayne and Travis kidnap the pizza delivery boy Nick and they dress Nick in a vest with a timer and several bombs. Then Dwayne tells Nick that he has ten hours to rob US$ 100,000 from a bank. Once he does, he would give Nick the code to release the vest. Nick summons his best friend Chet to help him in the heist but the scheme does not work the way Dwayne has plotted.
Two fledgling criminals kidnap a pizza delivery guy, strap a bomb to his chest, and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank or else...
How many obscenities can we use in a movie and does it make it outrageous, shocking and amusing to watch? NO, it does not! Watching this movie makes me feel like I have the answer to why our society is deteriorating into a mess of greedy, uncivilized, violent, sociopaths, that are destroying the quality of life in this country. If this tripe is considered amusing and entertainment, then the de-evolution is doing well. Yes, you can say that it does have a plot, albeit a lame one: lazy good-for-nothing son decides to entrap someone to rob a bank so he can get enough hit money to knock off his Dad and inherit the money to fulfill his goal of opening a tanning parlor/ prostitution business. Jesse Eisenberg, who plays the major role as the unlucky guy set up to rob the bank, is the only highlight of the movie. He has a strong presence and tries to make this pile of ignorance seem valid. I can't for the life of me figure out why he agreed to act in this nonsense. It follows along it's asinine plot, a few twists and turns (yawn)until it reaches the supposedly amusing ending and all is well. Unfortunately, they forgot to tie up one major plot conflict in this all's well that ends well conclusion, but I guess they assume the audience will be as mentally whacked out as the scriptwriter must have been to ever think about it. What makes me really sad, is that I can think of so many books that are wonderful and should be made into movies, and instead get crap like this gets financed, produced, and passed off as "entertainment".
30 Minutes or Less delivers on its pretty simplistic premise make the audience laugh by strapping a bomb to the main characters chest and throw every sexual innuendo and hilarious situation the creators could come up with. Some may find this movie an abrasive with its crude humor but it manages to stay true to what it was marketed as and in doing so created a funny , fast and forgettable comedy.
30 Minutes starts off promising establishing each pair of main characters ( the good guys and bad guys) and keeping a rather low humor profile only throwing funny and some not so funny racial and sexual slurs. After the low life pizza driver Nick (Eisenberg) is abducted and gets the bomb strapped to his chest by the free loading son of a millionaire Dwayne ( Mcbride) the movie begins to escalate quickly. With Nick's predicament causing his emotions to spike he seeks his friend Chet (Ansari) for help. This causes crazy anxiety between the two friends and the movie wisely runs up the pace considerably. In this lies 30 minute's greatest strength (being fun and crazy) and weakness because although the movie picks up a lot of speed it also concludes itself way to early to leave you feeling satisfied (under an hour and a half run time for sure). This leaves a few well constructed characters left literally to die
All in all there isn't much to say about this movie. Its short , unoriginal and doesn't really reach to be great by any means. However this movie knows it is all these things and presses onwards regardless. At times the jokes are very well placed and had my audience and myself in an uproar, while others some jokes completely missed and fell flat on there face. The ending came way to quick and felt way to simplified and unfinished. What the movie nailed for me was all the big four actors stepped up and kept the main story funny (Mcbride, Eisenberg, Ansari, Swardson).
Overall rating 6/10
"Less" has trouble framing simple action, yielding clumsy car chases that put the burden of generating excitement on the music and editing. As a result, pic looks cheap and feels clipped.
