When rich rancher El Jefe learns that his unmarried daughter is pregnant, he offers $1 million to anyone who brings him the head of the man responsible - Alfredo Garcia. Two of the bounty hunters, Quill and Sappensly, hire various people to go out and find Garcia for which they are offering a few thousand dollars. Piano player Bennie is one of those and as his prostitute girlfriend Elita knows Garcia, they set off to find him. When they learn Garcia is already dead, Bennie digs him up to get the head but only death and misery follows for everyone concerned.
An American barroom pianist and his prostitute girlfriend go on a road trip through the Mexican underworld to collect a $1 million bounty on the head of a dead gigolo.
Man is hired to kill man, alfredo Garcia. garcia is already dead. Man kills someone else and decides to bring the dead there as proof of death. Girlfriend id prostitute. Other people try to get the head away from him. Pained man and anguish follow, in well directed delicate scenes that do not explain the need for stylistic and unnecessary violence that ends the film. The plot and moral of the movie makes no sense and does not follow from what has come before. It's essentially a random movie. Only for people who think they see things in movies other don't or provide subtext and symbolism which they pretend the director intended to show to satisfy their elitist egos. I am a director too. Cinema is visual. Directors don't try to hide things. We are subtle but not evasive. I hate this movie, and I loved Convoy.
Really wanted to like this movie, since I've been hearing about how great it is for so long. But I think most people watching it today are not going to be very impressed, regardless of it influence and reputation.
First, its a slow moving movie. Very slow, glacial even. You have to wait a long time for anyone to say or do anything interesting through a lot of the movie.
Second, the sound is horrible. All dialogue has been dubbed in, badly.
Acting? I guess you could call it that. To be fair, with all the dubbed in lines its hard to evaluate. Oates is particularly horrible.
Cinemotagraphy? Peckipah definitely didn't waste any money on good quality film. What did he use? Super 8? The movie has that completely washed out look of the worst movies of the sixties and seventies.
And the costumes in the movie? Unintentionally hilarious. The worst excesses of 70s clothing.
So far, I haven't been able to make it all the way through, but its been a painful experience so far. I'll bet that most people seeing this movie won't make it past the first half hour. Its that unwatchable.
