It is a distant galaxy, in the far future year, 10191. Arrakis is a desert planet and the only source of Melange, a vital drug used by Guild Navigators for space travel from star system to star system. Two families, the Atreides and the Harkonnens, fight one another for sole control of the Melange mining operations on Arrakis. When Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated by the evil Baron Harkonnen, Duke Leto's son, Paul, and Paul's mother, the Lady Jessica, flee deep into the desert of Arrakis. There, they are befriended by the Fremen, natives of Arrakis. Under the influence of Melange, Paul learns he has special powers and, that he can see into the future. Paul unites the Freman under his leadership, forms an army of warriors, and leads them into battle against Baron Harkonnen and the corrupt Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, who is in league with the Harkonnens. Paul vows to avenge his father's murder, and sets out to liberate Arrakis and its people from the Emperor's rule, and to fulfill his destiny.
A Duke's son leads desert warriors against the galactic emperor and his father's evil nemesis when they assassinate his father and free their desert world from the emperor's rule.
Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Usul Muad'Dib Atreides something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick Sting as Feyd-Rautha Stewart, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt.
I imagine I'll get bitten for that.
Suggesting that Lynch's debated cult classic is better than the world love, world renowned media point that IS Star Wars?
How dare I.
However, I have simple reasoning; Dune is a movie that I put in a league closer to 2001; not the same, but closer than Star Wars. I love to sit down and be entertained by a movie, however, not as much as I love to sit down and get into a movie like Dune or 2001. These films make you think more, and too me, are more inspirational.
So while perhaps the special effects are not on par (say 2 for Dune and 4 out of five for Star Wars) the acting (4 for Dune, what can I say, but Jurgen Prochnow is one of my favorite actors!) and a 3 for Star Wars). Plot, a 2 for Star Wars (even though I loved the plot, and the expansions its taken), and a 4 for Dune.

Plot, a 2 for Star Wars (even though I loved the plot, and the expansions its taken), and a 4 for Dune.

So, if you're a cult movie fan like me, go rent this film. Understand its a melodramatic, operatic film, but it's a good one, and definitely worth a look. However, if you're a Star Wars fan, I don't advise it.
The problem is that the imagery—as Sadean as Pasolini's Salo—isn't rooted in any story impulse, and so its power dissipates quickly. The real venue for this film is either a grind house or the Whitney Museum.
Nowhere. It just does not exist. The closest we have to David Lynch's original vision is the theatrical release. Some people sometimes refer to the extended TV cut as the "director's cut" (and some even dare to offer copies of it in various auction sites under that label), but that couldn't be further removed from reality, as that version was rejected by Lynch to the point of deleting his name from the credits. A legal DVD of Dune: The Director's Cut exists, but that's for the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, not this film.

However, the cast and crew of Lynch's Dune have confirmed that Lynch showed them an 'assembly cut' of the film shortly after principal photography wrapped. Although the film had yet to go through post-production, the reaction was very positive. This cut has not been seen since (as is the case with most assembly cuts).

There is also a fan version available, that attempts to get closer to both the novel and David Lynch's original vision: http://www.fanedit.org/ifdb/412-dune-the-alternative-edition-redux It's "Backyard" by Emmett Chapman, included on his album Parallel Galaxy. Chapman was also the creator of the instrument (known as the Chapman Stick) that Gurney plays, repainted and with an added lower part to represent the Baliset described by Frank Herbert in the original novel. Herbert was very complimentary towards the film, impressed that Lynch had managed to include so much from his novel in such a short time. He did, however, take a small issue with the portrayal of Paul as having become a literal god-figure at the end. Both versions contain footage that's missing in the other one, but the Theatrical Version lacks way more footage. Furthermore several scenes have been removed and reinserted afterwards in the TV Version, some of them are edited differently. But these differences aren't mentioned in this comparison because it would break the mold. David Lychn's version is the Theatrical Version btw. He wasn't involved in the TV Version and ordered that his name in the opening credits was going to be replaced by Alan Smithee . The main difference in the two versions is the fact that the TV Version has been split up to smaller episodes. As a result of that, the movie doesn't look like a motion picture anymore but like a big TV production. a5c7b9f00b
