Never take your mistress on an annual guys' getaway, especially one devoted to hunting - a violent lesson for three wealthy married men.
The story sees three wealthy, middle-aged CEOs - all married family men - get together for their annual hunting game in a desert canyon. It's a way for them to let off steam and affirm their manhood with guns. But this time, one of them has come along with his young mistress, who quickly arouses the interest of the two others. Things get out of hand and she is left for dead in the middle of this arid hell. However, the young woman is very much alive, and the hunting game turns into a ruthless manhunt.
I feel kinda bad not recommending this in the #metoo age but man I was bored.
This is two movies mashed into one and it really just doesn't work. The first movie is your typical psychodelic goreporn revenge flick and the other movie it's trying to be is a serious "deadliest game" thiller.
It fails at being the first because they don't take it all the way and give you the laugh out loud evil dead 2 blood coming out of the walls moments. Instead it's just unfunny unrealistic gore moments.
It fails as a thiller because all of the characters are bland and uninteresting. Not only that but the characters personalities change on a dime. The protagonist for instance goes from being a helpless deer to a Navy Seal in one scene. It never feels but like she struggles. She just switches gears. The same could be said of the antagonists. Her boyfriend switches from protector to villain to sociopath murder machine in the span of 5 minutes in the film. The other two villains are just backround scenery. There's no build up or logic to it all. The funny thing is at first its not really made clear why they're at the house. I thought they were mercenaries which would explain the night and day attitude switches, but then it turns out these are supposed to be normal if wealthy joes going on a yearly hunt?
It's a shame because the film has some cool ideas and cinematography. I just cant recommend a movie with a few neat ideas. If you're willing to sit through a movie that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be this is worth a look. Thats about it.
The lead actress is lovely. I'll say that much.
I have no idea what this mess is pretending to be. A black-comic suspense/gore thriller film? Save for a sexy dance by the lead there's nothing to recommend.
French film (w/ characters switching between French and English) begins at some posh location in what appears to be a mountainous desert (w/ a convenient river nearby) terrain owned by some rich mid-30's guy who's cheating on his wife.
With an incredible looking young woman. Two "friends" of the guy show up ahead of time. We're introduced to them being mesmerized by the blonde and looking like a couple of pervs about to jump her as soon as rich guy leaves for some convenient reason (one does...the other watches so to speak.)
Things escalate when rich guy returns. He makes a show of berating the sleazy rapist friend. But soon he's all "It's OK baby I got you a job in Canada."
She persists in wanting a ride home (by copter; the way she arrived sucking on a lollipop) and things escalate again when rich guy slaps her and a chase ends up at the edge of a precipice. Where a fake phone call is made and then just when you most expect it she'd knocked over the cliff.
At this point the movie was going along and you're wondering hmm...where exactly are we going? I'll tell you...straight to Stupid Land.
Because "Jen" doesn't die. She lands and is impaled on a dead tree. The trio goes "Ooh" and it's decided they'll cover tracks and clean up later.
Jen wakes up later...impaled w/ what should be a gaping wound in her abdomen (and piercing some vital organs along the way.) Blood pouring out her mouth...down the tree trunk...oh look there's my ear-bud cables. Think I'll use them to conveniently tug my cigarette lighter over...to set fire to the very thing holding me up. Which magically lets me go as it's engulfed in flames and I land on my stomach w/o so much as a groan.
The trio returns. Jen pulls herself along at that moment and finds the strength (imagine that) to hide against the rock-face and hide from view (great timing although one thug tossed his beer can over to warn her...thanks!)
She then proceeds to bleed what looks like two gallons of boysenberry syrup as she moves along toward that river I mentioned earlier (as day turns quickly to night; must be 2-hour days in that unnamed region.)
The trio split up and one encounters Jen as she grabs his rifle (to find it empty.) He radios he has Jen. Starts to drown her in the river as he laughs about how he lets his prey think they're hunting him not vice-versa. Jen spots an 8-inch knife on his person (wouldn't we all while being drowned and after bleeding out like a stuck abattoir for several hours?) and she swipes it and stabs him hard in the eye socket as he thrashes about like Bozo the Eye-Stabbed Clown.
At that point I stopped the film and deleted it from my Amazon list. WHO in heck is giving this pile of rubbish good reviews? I've seen films that disappointed the heck out of me but I'll be dog-gone if I'll sit through a film this unbelievably empty-headed.
NOT funny unless watching someone being drowned by Thug C as Thug B sits in a vehicle w/ seat heaters and listening to goofy music on the victim's I-Pod is your idea of a laugh-a-thon. NOT suspenseful and as puerile as Trump boasting of female genitalia grabbing.
No way will this improve by further watching; based on reviews I've poured through to help explain inexplicable good ones things start off OK then tail off which has to be a sign of how much more moronic things become.
Something else I can't understand: The talk of there being an "empowered woman" in the lead. Folks there are plenty of empowered female leads in films even of this nature ("You're Next" off my head-top; "The Brave One" and imo I'd enjoy seeing more females taking charge for real vs. imaginary.)
NOT the case w/ this wretched film unless you're idea of empowerment involves being the "other woman" to a slime-ball who receives oral sex the moment they're alone inside his desert getaway mansion, as well as performing impromptu slut-dance moves for his hoggish friends (one of whom of course takes that as a sign she wants to jump him.) Come a long way baby?
I was expecting a surprise of some kind despite reservations. This was utterly insipid and as ground-breaking as a fart contest in a frat-house. AVOID...look for Matilda Lutz photos online if you must check (sort of) nude shots of her from this and save money and time. I want to punch the bots that must be creating positive reviews for this ding-bat pile of dung.
The film works best if you approach it as a fantasy, with Jen as a near-supernatural angel of vengeance; otherwise, it’s easy to get hung up on the inconsistencies as the action grows increasingly over-the-top.
