When a man acquitted of murder on a legal technicality is found dead along with his lawyer, chauffeur, and bodyguard, Harry and his new partner 'Early' Smith start to investigate but are ordered off by Harry's boss, Lt. Neil Briggs - a man who Harry despises because of his bleeding-heart approach to law enforcement. Soon after, a mafia figure and several of his family & friends are gunned down at a pool party, and a drug dealer is also murdered. While this is going on, Harry & Early stop an aircraft hijacking and a liquor store robbery. After a well-known pimp is murdered - in circumstances that point to a traffic stop - Harry & Early are reassigned by Briggs to investigate the homicides. When Harry is tasked with arresting mob boss Frank Palancio, the result is a bloodbath in which both Palancio and a young police officer are killed. In addition, Harry's friend & fellow cop Charlie McCoy is savagely murdered - by another cop! Things heat up even more when Harry discovers a bomb in his mailbox - and Harry finds himself in serious trouble when his boss pulls a gun on him. Now Harry must fight for his life against the crooked cops and his traitorous boss.This is Dirty Harry at one of is finest, I am so surprised to being a sequel to. I thought this one was about as good as the first, I loved the storyline, the cast was great; and the action was there from beginning to end. The time line on this film I would like to say is probably a month or too after solving The Scorpio case, just a guesstimate.
The Movie is about rouge cops cleaning up the scum of the city by killing them once they are free from prison/jail. You will find out later in the movie that Lt. Bressler, Hal Holbrook, is the ringleader of the bunch. This has vigilantism written all over it; and it wouldn't surprise me if this or something like it was ever tried in real life.
Lt. Bressler grooming young academy grads, into police killing machines. They are motorcycle officer's who, find the cities worst criminals track them down and clean the city of their filth so to speak. Bressler believe this is the best way to rid the cities crime problem, especially when the courts fail.
Harry suspects the worst and forwards the info to his partner, both now have targets on their back. It's up to Harry to stop the madness of Bressler and his corrupt organization until it's too late. A great movie and on of the best sequels I have ever seen. Kris L. CocKayneClint Eastwood is back in "Magnum Force", an overall serviceable sequel to the incredible "Dirty Harry". This time around, San Francisco is being stalked by a group of wayward motorcycle cops, who are fed up with an ineffective D.A.'s office. And who better to go after such an above-the-law group than ... Dirty Harry?
Car chases and gunfights rule the day in "Magnum Force", but the tension and taut direction of Don Siegel is sorely missing (replaced by the made-for-TV-movie style of Ted Post). And the film is written by none other than Michael Cimino and John Milius (heavyweights by any standard), but the story here tends to meander, while the movie stands best as an excuse to see Eastwood reload his Smith and Wesson for another go-around.
And this might be nitpicking, but why is Harry still on the force? When last we saw Callahan, he was throwing away his badge after skirting the law to nail the untouchable bad guy. I can't really see a more distinct line drawn in the sand for a police officer, but this movie has our no-nonsense cop back on the force as if nothing happened.
"Magnum Force" lacks the punch of the original, and I don't see myself watching this again, anytime soon.
5/10While never as disturbing as the first film, it fails to convince because of the turnaround in Harry's character, and because it posits in facile fashion degrees of taking the law into one's own hands: Harry's acceptable, the gun crazy kids aren't. That said, it has some fine action sequences, and is far less objectionable than the later Sudden Impact.The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. It is assumed that no one who is diligently avoiding spoilers will be visiting this page in the first place. Because the film is careful to avoid showing the motorcycle cops' faces when they kill criminals, it is hard to tell which cop is at which crime scene. Additionally, the voices of the cops conducting the two traffic stop shootings are made to sound similar so you can't make a voice recognition and are left guessing as to whether it's the same cop or two different guys. Some believe Red Astrachan is responsible for either the execution of Ricca and everyone in his car or for the pool massacre, and Mike Grimes for the other one. It is presumed by Captain Avery in the morgue scene (and a mention that Phil Sweet found the pimp's body) that Sweet is responsible for executing the pimp.
Of the four motorcycle cops, only John Davis is certainly responsible for the assassination of Lou Guzman and his associates, as well as Charlie McCoy, given that we see him taking off his helmet when speaking to DiGeorgio after shooting McCoy in the parking garage.
However, it is also very likely that Davis might have carried the pimp's murder: Sweet clearly has brunette hair. There is a closeup of the killer cop's sunglasses when he is asking the pimp for his license and vehicle registration, where you can clearly see that he has blond hair sticking out from under his helmet, and Davis is the only one of the four motorcycle cops who is blond. This makes Avery's implication at the morgue that Sweet was responsible for the pimp killing either a continuity error or Sweet was nearby acting as a back-up to Davis. This line caused great controversy amongst gun enthusiasts as it suggested that Dirty Harry used the much weaker 44 Special cartridge in his revolver rather than the tremmendously powerful 44 Magnum (the Smith and Wesson Model 29 capable of using both). According to screenwriter John Milius the crew simply fluffed his dialogue, what Harry means is that he uses a specially prepared slightly lighter version of one of the strongest varieties of 44 Magnum bullets in order to give him 'less recoil and more control'. There are five: (1) Dirty Harry (1971) (1971), (2) Magnum Force (1973), (3) The Enforcer (1976) (1976), (4) Sudden Impact (1983) (1983), and (5) The Dead Pool (1988) (1988). The most likely answer is that the cab driver supplied a description of the pimp to the police. Perhaps he was interviewed by a sketch artist as well. They probably were able to identify the pimp through both a mugshot and through a background check on the victim. Once there, it was a matter of one of the killer cops tracking down the car. It's also possible that the killer had already targeted the pimp for previous crimes or simply for the fact he was obviously a pimp. It was only coincidence that he was killed the day after murdering his prostitute.Sweet is killed by Palancio in the dockside shootout. Grimes is killed by Harry running his motorbike over with his car. Red Astrachan is killed by Harry using karate blows to the neck on board the aircraft carriers. Davis rides his motorbike off the side of the aircraft carrier and into the bay whilst pursuing Harry where he is knocked unconscious and drowns. Harry blows Briggs up using the bomb from his mailbox.
