In 2079, in Washington, the ex-CIA Operative Snow is brutally interrogated, accused of treason against the United States. The chief of the secret service Scott Langral believes that he shot the agent Frank in a hotel room. Meanwhile, the idealistic daughter of the president of the USA, Emilie Warnock, is visiting MS One, a maximum security prison in outer space expecting to find evidence that the prisoners are actually guinea pigs of a huge corporation. When one of her bodyguards loses a hidden pistol to the dangerous prisoner Hydell, he subdues the staff in the central control room and releases the prisoners, including his brother Alex who becomes the leader of the riot. Now the veteran agent Harry Shaw offers freedom to Snow if he succeeds in rescuing the president's daughter. But the idealistic Emilie does not want to leave MS-One without the hostages.
Set in the near future, a falsely convicted ex-government agent has one chance at obtaining freedom. He must undertake a dangerous mission to rescue the President's daughter from rioting convicts at an outer space maximum-security prison.
Caught this late Friday night with my girl after the Drake gig and had a good night overall. After being on my feet for hours it was good to sit on my arse at twelve on the night and just switch off and enjoy a mindless bit of action. And that's exactly what 'Lockout' offers. If you've seen Luc Besson's Europacorp action flicks you know what to expect. I love all of them and this was no exception. Guy Pearce is the show stealer as Agent Snow, the John McClane of the space age. His wisecracks and mindless violence keep your attention. Maggie Grace is as good as ever as the damsel in distress and the supporting actors do a bang up job as well. Almost stealing the show from Pearce, but not quite, is Joseph Gilgun as the nutty Scot, sure to make you laugh once or twice, even if you're hating the film. The effects are well done, the action over-the-top and exciting and it's overall good late night entertainment. As with all these sorts of films, I'm sure critics and serious Sci-fi nuts are going to hate. But as I always say, for people who can switch off and enjoy a bit of brainless fun, this is a must. Let the haters hate and the watchers watch.

When I initially saw this advertised I was naturally a bit apprehensive. Having memories still fresh in my mind of how terrible Die Hard 5 was, I was hardly sure I was ready for another John McClane style action flick. The thought of it being in space filled my mind with even more dread and brought back bad memories of Moonraker with it's overly cheesy plot and dialogue (sorry to the fans of good old bond, but really? James Bond in space?), I thought, oh no, here we go again.
However, having soldiered on and putting my fears to one side I was pleasantly surprised to find out Guy Pearce is not such a bad action hero after all. For all his character's abrasive nature throughout the film, there are often funny moments which detract away from what could have just as easily been a much harder edged storyline. For me I thought it was a needed relief especially when his character is seemingly taking nothing that's happening around him seriously, this in part helped me to happily settle into the film. Maggie Grace was also a welcome relief, okay she's pretty and she's the President's daughter and the reason for the whole embargo but it's ni

For me I thought it was a needed relief especially when his character is seemingly taking nothing that's happening around him seriously, this in part helped me to happily settle into the film. Maggie Grace was also a welcome relief, okay she's pretty and she's the President's daughter and the reason for the whole embargo but it's nice to see her also handle her own later on with her 'take no crap' attitude even if she does have the odd weeping moment she ultimately proves you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Yes, there were a few poor CGI moments in the film, but none more shocking in my opinion than you would find in the new Star Wars trilogy. This did make it easier for me accept that I could happily go on without feeling such an overwhelming hatred of the main plot and enjoy the film for exactly what it is, a cheesy blend of action with a guy trying to save the girl.

I found myself enjoying the over the top nature of the storyline, and also found it somewhat nostalgic in bringing back memories of those good old days of the Demolition Man style anti-hero action films, which leave you more often than not feeling quite satisfied that you haven't just wasted your time and money. All in all it was a fun film with some good bad guys and over the top action sequences with a nice new take on a classic genre.
Tackles a nifty futuristic premise with bargain-basement efficiency and a deadpan, devil-may-care attitude. It's an initially invigorating tactic that proves slapdash and unsatisfying over the long haul, reducing a potentially rich sci-fier to the level of a halfway decent time-killer
Guy Pearce met with Luc Besson at the beginning of 2010 in LA to discuss the film and then met with Stephen St. Leger and James Mather a few months later. He thought the script felt original, which is always what he is looking for. He also liked the idea of playing an irreverent character like Snow. He was drawn to him because he's not the typical action hero. He exhibited a lazy and exhausted quality. It has quite some tradition that some of writer/producer Luc Besson's movies get censored for a more profitable PG-13 rating. The censorship for the PG-13 rating is obviously no unknown territory for the filmmakers in Besson's team since they managed to take the edge off it very well by applying almost every tool one could think of. Next to using harmless alternate takes or simply cutting something out, the PG-13 also delivers a censored dialogue, audio line and even digitally manufactured visual alterations (and maybe even blood that's not quite as red as it is normally). A lot of effort to make a film that is usually aiming at experienced B-action buffs suitable for teenagers. a5c7b9f00b
