Book descriptionThe writing’s somewhat less polished here, but overall still better than some. Maybe because it feels intelligent, so the occasional repetitive sentence structure or clumsy self-description of the narrator don’t seem to matter so much.The story as such is actually refreshingly creepy. Nightmares of red eyes and the like? This is such a classic and in keeping with the demon/angel theme. XDPaul’s catholic guilt is pretty neat as well. I see this so rarely in books, and never in this matter-of-fact way. Usually it’s overdramatized yet not taken to its logical extreme. Here? It’s quiet but potent.Of course, all of the above applies to the first half. After passing midpoint things devolve somewhat.When we get to the actual lovey-dovey stuff, it comes a bit out of nowhere. Well, okay, the big love stuff does. Insta-love. Endless mutual professions of “I love you”. It still had a nice build up to that point, for what it’s worth.Honestly, even if it’s kind of simple and the love is kinda just conjured up by the author, this is (for the most part) beautiful in the way an angel story should be, but so rarely is with romances.On the whole, this is still porn, though. Generally less good than the other story I read (My Handyman), too. Looking back, it’s just the first half that was pretty good, while the second quickly drifted into, well, drivel. And yet it’s still better than some of the crap I read recently. Go figure.Where matters turn extraordinary again is the epilogue(view spoiler)[, which actually sums up the rest of their life together including the narrator’s death at an old age some fifty years later. And wouldn’t you know, I teared up even though it ends happily. I guess.Death gets to me (almost) every time. The image of those two old men dying together and all tangled up in death? Yeah. Don’t care if their souls ascend to heaven or they’re reborn as angels or whatever to be together forever.
