Two hip detectives protect a witness to a murder while investigating a case of stolen heroin from the evidence storage room from their police precinct.
Detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Brunette have 72 hours to find $100 million worth of heroin before Internal Affairs shuts them down. Lowery becomes more involved after a friend is murdered by the drug dealers. Matters become complicated when Lowery and Brunette have to switch places to convince a witness to the murder to cooperate.
The directorial debut from Michael Bay (The Rock, Armageddon, Transformers) is a fantastic action comedy thriller. Basically Det. Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) is the married family man, and Det. Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) is the single loose cannon. They are partners in the Miami Police Department about to take on a highly dangerous case involving $100m of heroin, the biggest drug bust up, stolen from police headquarters. Marcus and Mike have 72 hours to reclaim the heroin before the Internal Affairs Division gets involved, and to keep an eye on the high rollers, including drug kingpin Fouchet (Tchéky Karyo), Mike asks hooker Maxine, and she gets her (not hooker) friend Julie Mott (Deep Impact's Téa Leoni) to tag along. At the house of former cop Eddie Dominguez, Fouchet kills Maxine, and Julie witnessed the murder and managed to escape to contact the police. But she will only talk to Mike, and not knowing what he looks like she phones, and when Mike is not in the right place, Marcus had to answer the phone pretending to be Mike before she hung up and for the information. As the case continues, Mike and Marcus have to keep up the pretence of being each other, which is causing problems for his Marcus's wife Theresa (Theresa Randle), and Mike with concern of his apartment. There are a couple of gun shooting before she eventually finds out their pretending, and then Julie is kidnapped right under their noses and they have a final gun fight. Also starring Memento's Joe Pantoliano as Captain C. Howard, Marg Helgenberger as Capt. Alison Sinclair, Nestor Serrano as Detective Sanchez, Julio Oscar Mechoso as Detective Ruiz and Saverio Guerra as Chet, the Doorman. The action sequences (many things blowing up) are fantastic, Smith and Lawrence are equally as funny and profane (swear a lot) as each other, this film film has equal numbers of hilarious jokes, heart-beating action and gripping thrills to keep you engaged. Will Smith was number 51 on The 100 Greatest Movie Stars. Very good!
This is the poster child for vacuous, violent Hollywood garbage. This is the real crappy Bruckhiemer stuff. The actors are all in single shot reading their lines to the script girl. All the attention is to the action set pieces but its so unmotivated that its mechanical and uninvolving. The waste of talent and resources is depressing.
The other depressing thing is how many people fall for it. You will see many people claim great things for this crap. This is not a matter of opinion. This is true crap. You like this, you don't like movies.
This is not the worst movie I have ever seen. This one is in focus.
There's only so far a movie can go on loud music, nicely-framed shots, testosterone, and adrenaline. Bad Boys takes the often-traveled road, and leads the audience to a dead end.
