A shaolin kung-fu practitioner seeks a way to spread the word about his chosen art when he meets a down-on-his-luck lame ex-footballer (a.k.a. soccer player) who trains him and his five dejected brothers to play, incorporating their specialized martial arts skills. They form a team and soon enter a prestigious tournament with a one million dollar prize, eventually facing an unscrupulous rival coach and his drug-enhanced players.
After a fateful mistake costing his career, an ex-soccer player bum meets a shaolin kung fu student trying to spread the word of kung fu. The ex-soccer player helps reconcile with his five brothers, and teaches them soccer, adding shaolin kung fu as a twist.
Wow, I was really surprised by this movie. It is totally unique, I've never seen anything else like it. There is a very charming love story, and the effects are really cool. The idea of combining kung fu with soccer is very original.... even though it's so bizarre, you'll find yourself asking why nobody has done anything like this before. I laughed constantly throughout this movie and went out and bought it a few days after I first saw it.
I would recommend it to everyone I know. This is the best Asian comedy since the heyday of Jackie Chan and "Fighting Benny"! Go see it, buy it, whatever, just make sure you do see this film.
I would be surprised if there is not a sequel. This film should have been released theatrically in the US; I've heard Miramax handled it. Sorry guys you lost millions of dollars, this film would have been a smash hit. They probably just didn't think that soccer would sell in America, but word of mouth would have sold this movie very well.
Most of the film of Chow Sing Chi are funny. And for Shaolin Soccer, it makes be laugh from the beginning to the end. All audience laughed and clapped hands during that time. I love the part when Chow Sing chi was singing with another man, Wong Yut Fei ( I don't know whether I translate his name correctly or not) But I think it's a little bit exaggerated. But anyway ,it's an amazing film.
Everything you've ever loved (or hated) but were afraid to laugh at in Asian martial-arts movies, ''Matrix''-ian bullet-time actioners, and Farrellyesque slapstick comedies -- all rolled into Hong Kong's highest-grossing local production ever.
Basically there are three different versions around. First of all one has to differentiate between the original Hong Kong Theatrical Version and the Director's Cut. The latter features two extended scenes and some outtakes before the end credits and runs approx. 10 minutes longer than the Theatrical Version.
There's also an International Cut available that runs more than 20 minutes shorter than the Asian versions. More than a 100 scenes were altered. At the end of the movie, Team Shaolin defeated Team Evil and won the championship. Sing's cyclone kick scored the winning goal. This can be clearly seen on the scoreboard during the final Trophy ceremony. Although many people believe Team Evil was leading 1-0 prior to Sing's cyclone kick, this is also not true. When the Team Evil player kicked the ball into Empty Hands' face and knocked him through the goal, the ball did not enter the net. a5c7b9f00b
