A smart alecky San Francisco, California cop and his get rich quick scheme of a partner keep tabs on crime and take down the bad guys in the Bay Area.
Nash Bridges (Don Johnson) is a celebrated veteran police officer, and head of the SIU Department of the San Francisco, California Police Department. With his best friend and partner for life Joe Dominguez (Richard Anthony "Cheech" Marin), and his loyal crew of law enforcement, they're the best of the best in taking down the crime that plagues the city. From powerful people of immense wealth right on down to scum at the bottom of the ladder, Bridges will take them down in his lifelong devotion to the law. But aside from his professional exploits, he's a divorced single father with a young teenage daughter ahead of her time, a father whose attitude refuses to confine himself to a nursing home, and relationships that never quite solidify because of his career.
Having grown up with Starsky and Hutch, I enjoyed Nash a lot. A fun buddy series, with good chemistry between Johnson and Marin (who actually steals a lot of their scenes together). I can't understand why so many people compare it to Miami Vice, which was posing and pretentious, while this show has its tongue firmly planted in its cheek.
So the plots are far-fetched and the characters are a bit thin ... this is Don Johnson for chrissake. There are enough car chases and pretty women to keep the guys amused (OK, so Yasmine Bleeth couldn't act her way out of a paper bag...who cares?), and some nice by-play between Nash and his formidable ex-wives and daughter.
Don't expect rocket science here. This is definitely beer and crisps material, but enjoyable nonetheless. I give it an 8.
I never watched the series until it was canceled and running on the USA Network in syndication. (My Bad!) This is a wonderful show and although it was based on crime fighting, the relationships between it's characters (and I mean characters!) is the primary draw. Not only does the "Nash" character has to deal with ex-wives, a daughter becoming a woman, a dad (Nash's Father) whose dementia is forcing confusing and even tender moments in all of their lives, it's the interaction with all of the colorful characters of San Francisco and the Bay Area in general.
The repeating sub characters, Boz, Pepe, Tony B, Jake Cage, Eldon and Tamara Van Zant add a continuing story line and tie things together over the course of the series.
Joe Dominguez (Cheech Marin) who is Nash's partner also has his own family issues and ads a comical side to life in dealing with his need for money schemes, a wife from Sweden who launches into tirades of Swedish when she's upset, a son whose job is to pick mushrooms for a living, an older mother-in-law who only speaks Swedish and is a "pot-head", all add another dimension and fills the series with life.
There are comments from "Joe" that are hysterical and can only be delivered by Marin. ("It sounded like she said 'You can't drive a fish through a vacuum, unplugged.'")
The whole series and the plethora of action makes you feel like you're on a really fun carnival ride full of bright colors and constant action. Instead of giving you a headache, it just makes you feel good.
I'm looking forward to the entire series coming out on DVD.
