A high school senior finds herself immersed in an online game of truth or dare, where her every move starts to become manipulated by an anonymous community of "watchers."
Venus is a hard-working high school senior, focused, with drive and a pending scholarship at CalArts, the esteemed art school in California, that would help her spread her wings and leave Staten Island, her homeplace. Diffident enough and constantly in the shadow of her popular friend Sydney, Venus will be enticed by the notoriously hardcore reality online game "Nerve", and accept to become, for once in her life, a "player" instead of a mere "watcher". However, Venus is definitely not an adrenaline junkie, so by leaving her comfort zone, she will be gradually lured into an ongoing wave of incrementally difficult assignments, all contrived by the "watchers'" hungry appetite for thrills and excitement. When Venus accepts to kiss Ian, a random guy who turns out to be another "Nerve" player, the "watchers" will not be able to get enough of the couple, demanding to team up against an all-night, white-knuckle truth or dare adventure all over town. Inevitably, as the game insidiously claims Vee's personal life and friends, she will have to face one relentless dilemma: how far is she willing to go to win back her life?
Simon Says (or Simple Simon Says) is a child's game issuing simple instructions. Harmless and fun at first, but as the game progresses one player might dare you to do the unthinkable and of course the choice would be up to you to accept or decline it. Life was simple then when we had games like this or board games children enjoyed wanting to play. Now in this day and age technology is our newest friend. This and much more are the overall themes behind "Nerve." High school senior Venus Delmonico "Vee" feels withdrawn and cautious about her choices in life. It doesn't help that she got accepted to go to CalArts but after the unexpected death of her older brother she has become her mother's (Juliette Lewis, offering little to the story) top priority, afraid of her venturing out. Once dared by her best friend Sydney (Emily Meade of "Money Monster") to try Nerve: an online reality video game of objective-focused "truth or dare" where people either enlist online as "players" or pay to watch as "watchers". Vee along with fellow player Ian (Dave Franco of "Now You See Me 2"), are caught into deadly objectives, with their identity taken and victory being the escape. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman ("Catfish") "Nerve" paints a picture of the world we live in now, from the film's opening montage showing Vee's daily schedule from "Spotify to Facebook", Joost and Schulman raise questions on Privacy concerns, Illegal downloading, Unnecessary apps and more. But sadly that's all it manages to achieve; questions we are ourselves already have answers to or want answers to. Especially during the third act where the hidden agenda is revealed. Screenwriter Jessica Sharzer ("American Horror Story", adapting from a novel written by Jeanne Ryan) weaves together an interesting story with two likable leads. The chemistry between Roberts and Franco really carry the movie for its runtime, as Roberts fragile and cautious nature sub comes to Franco's alluring and charismatic appeal. Cinematographer Michael Simmonds illuminates the city with vibrant and lush neon lights taking a chapter from "The Neon Demon". A scene in particular in which Vee has to help be Ian's eyes as he drives at 60 Mbps blindfolded is frightening and yet beautiful thanks in addition to music by Rob Simonsen. "Nerve" might not be the best example of how the technology we use influences our daily lives, but it certainly will entertain with each dare.
I was recommended this by a friend and when they told me the idea of the game and the plot I just felt like i had to watch it. But I was slightly disappointed. The positives: The acting on behalf of Emma Roberts and Dave Franco was good, they really brought the characters to life and presented their torture from the game well. The suspense created was class, especially during the ladder scene that had me biting my nails. It was a good length and didn't drag the story on anymore than it was needed. The negatives: The game of nerve starts off really interesting and exciting, but ends bizarrely with the "prisoners" and the fact there is a final? Surely just play the game of nerve until you want to stop, I feel that would have been better. I also found it ludicrous how the computer geeks managed to stop the server. I also think that the message of the story would have been presented across better if Emma Roberts had died. The little twist at the end just came out of nowhere and didn't really make any sense? 6/10 Wouldn't watch it again. But wasn't awful.
Nerve is a comic-book vision of how the Internet has become a gladiatorial arena of voyeurism. But the movie, like the game it’s about, is hard to stop watching, even when you know it’s playing you.
