Preliminary Steps in Hydrographic Surveying. The method starts by locating special control points along the shore line. The sounding method is employed to determine the depth at various points by means of stationary boats. Sounding locations can be either made from boat to the control points or by fixing a point in the
reoccupied, as in land surveying. The selection of a positioning method determines the num- ber and type of shoreside reference points needed to support a survey. A well-prepared positioning plan is critical to the expeditious execution of sounding operations. The plan should include (1) the method of positioning.

calibrated daily by Bar Checks, up to the maximum depth of the survey area and on the working phase of the echo sounder, before and after sounding. The records of such Bar Checks shall be marked on the same echo roll used for the particular day's sounding and shall be subject to inspection by Surveyor. Method.
1 Jan 2002 Lead Line or Sounding Disk Measurement. Prior to the accepted use of acoustic depth sounding methods in the 1950s, lead lines were the Corps standard for hydrographic survey depth measurement, as illustrated in Figure 8-1. At one time they were used as the calibration reference for acoustic soundings

Topics covered include the establishment of horizontal control, connection of sounding datums to vertical control, conventional hydrographic methods and automation. Of particular interest arethe Canadian classification
Location by Cross-Rope. This is the most accurate method of locating the soundings and may be used for rivers, Knowing the constant speed and the total time elapsed at the instant of sounding, the distance of the total point can Since all the observations are taken from the boat, the surveyor has better control over the

1 Jan 2002 Single beam acoustic depth sounding is by far the most widely used depth measurement technique in. USACE for reflectivity of the bottom and related signal processing methods used to discern a valid return. The shape, or perhaps the most difficult aspect of hydrographic surveying. Along with
