Vash the Stampede is the most infamous outlaw on the planet Gunsmoke and with a 60 billion double dollar price on his head the most sought after!
Trigun takes place in the distant future on a deserted planet. Vash the Stampede is a gunfighter with a legend so ruthless that he has a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on his head. Entire towns evacuate at the rumor of his arrival. However, the real Vash the Stampede is not the same man that rumor portrays him to be. The enigmatic and conflicted lead character in Trigun is actually more heroic in nature; as well as a complete and utter idiot at times.
I came across a video on youtube where someone presented his favourite anime heroes. The dynamic between characters Vash/Wolfwood shown in this short clip made me curious, so I went looking. And am really glad I did so, because that was something I will not forget anytime soon.
The humour, timing and dynamic between the main characters are almost unparalleled. Joss Whedon's Firefly came to my mind, not only when the regular ass kicking starts (which is both awesome and hilarious at the same time), but also watching Vash, Wolfwood, Meryl and Milly fighting or just having a good time. There's a lot of goofing around in the first half of the series which still occurs from time to time later on, when the tone changes towards a darker, more serious one. You should have some tolerance for a certain amount of cartoonish off-goofing, though. Since the timing in the show can only be called superb, I almost died laughing in numerous scenes.
The voice acting (Japanese version) was fantastic. I generally prefer subbed over dubbed, although that's open to anyone's personal preferences, I guess. But concerning a certain, deeply tragic scene towards the end of the show, XXX made me feel like sharp pieces of radioactive metal were piercing my throat, his American counterpart just could not create the same amount of compassion within me – by far. Seriously, Masaya Onosaka and Shō Hayami are incredible in their parts and manage to maintain a perfect balance between goofing around and touching you deeply (without the need to speak or understand Japanese to appreciate their performance). Very memorable, like the music of the show, adding immensely to the original setting and feel of Trigun. The animation fits the tone of the series perfectly, although it can be rather puristic at times.
Luckily, Yasuhiro Naitō does not try too hard to impose the Christian values of his hero on the viewer. The question is rather, what do we do when the principles we were raised with don't longer apply to the world we are living in. Are principles really absolute? Under what circumstances can we be allowed to break the self-imposed or indoctrinated rules we live our lives by? And what will be the price we might have to pay for breaking with our morals and principles Great show. I could have watched dozens of more episodes. Good things always go way too quickly.
As much as I loved Cowboy Bebop, I am afraid I would have to say that Trigun was as good and at points better. Sure Bebop had the beautiful animation, but it wasn't as deep as Trigun. Sure Trigun has its flaws.(the stupid animation transitions to bad manga expressions and the bad dubbing). But the storyline was ten times more in depth, yes I know the charm of Bebop is that you really don't anything about the characters. But with Trigun you really need to pay attention. I read some complaints as to that it was confusing with the origins of Vash and Knives. Thats a case where paying attention would really help. Fans of Jerry Bruckheimer films should not watch anime such as Trigun. When Knives said they were plants he was refering to the power sources of cities on the planet Gunsmoke. That was how Vash was able to deal with the power plants in episodes such as the Flying Ship episode and other episodes like . As to their origins no one was alive from the crew of the SEEDS ship when they first appeared. So not even the two characters Vash and Knives themselves really knew they were from except they were pieces of what was known as the "Lost Technology". The depth of the story is the way the characters play out. We initially see Vash as a bumbling good natured idiot. As later see, it becomes more and more apparent thats not his true nature. We first begin to realize this when he first runs into Wolfwood. And how in his dreams he always see Rem saying that he is always so serious even in his dreams. The free wheeling idiot is mask that he wears to cover the pain, after his mother dies and he learns that his brother is essentially the devil himself. People do many things to hide their pain drugs, alcohol, and etc. Vash however pretends to be just an ordinary idiot. Someone that you notice but don't really believe is a real threat. Also, it then becomes a great disguise. The other character that is intriguing the Wolfwood a priest who does not have a problem killing, and it is Vash himself that points out that "Thou Shalt Not Kill." Which parodies all the Christian Fundamentalists that are pro death penalty and are in favor war. Then conversely later Vash himself has his pacifistic belief system attacked when he finally confronts Legato Bluesummers. Most certainly an interesting view on ethics.
