Two master thieves are finally retiring after one last successful mission. Residing in their own tropical paradise, their old nemesis, FBI Agent Stan P. Lloyd shows up to make sure they really are retired. Docked in the port is an ocean liner called the "Diamond Cruise" and Stan is convinced that they're not really retired at all, and that this is the next setup. While Lola is busy settling into their new life and trying to find ways to keep busy, Max is contemplating whether or not to steal the diamond. Now the question is, will he? Will Stan finally catch him after eight years of chasing him? Will Lola help Max steal it? And what of that shady character that told Max he must steal the diamond for him?
After a successful last score, a master thief retires to an island paradise. His lifelong nemesis, a crafty FBI agent, washes ashore to ensure he's making good on his promise. The pair soon enters into a new game of cat-and-mouse.
Ah, those jewel thieves. What fun scoundrels they are. Always charming and distinguished, never stealing stuff the boring way. The only problem is, when they decide to call it quits there would always be the ONE LAST BIG JOB and they would just have to take it. And those big jobs always prove to be a major pain in the butt. Not to mention that the thieves should always prepare a flashback-supported twist cause if they don't have one in store, some other character will probably put one on them.
Pierce Brosnan and Selma Hayek in After Sunset are two fine examples of jewel-thief subculture. The problem is (as with the movie in general) that their clever heist schemes are basically doomed in every possible world except in fantasy dreamland where these two are obviously living in. In the beginning they try to steal a diamond from FBI agent Woody Harrelson. However, their plan relies on so many wild assumptions and impossibilities that it, of course, bombs. Hmmm, wait.. it doesn't. It actually works perfectly. Oh, well. I guess this movie IS set in fantasy dreamland. It just needs more palm trees and exotic beaches. Oh, here they are!
OK, sarcasm aside, this movie's plot with all it's dubious twists and turns is stupid. No doubt about it. The other side is that it's set on an exotic island, it has his shares of funny and amusing (if convoluted) situations and you'll probably have fun watching it. Just keep in mind that you shouldn't think too much about the believability of the plot. OK, scratch "too much" from the last sentence. Just relax, turn off your brain and enjoy the show.
After the Sunset sees Pierce Brosnan play an ex-jewel thief in a simple "will the old pro come out of retirement for one last job" movie that is far more entertaining than its unoriginal premise sounds.
Pierce Brosnan takes to his dressed-down James Bond role very well, and the jokes and his style make him a very likable character. Woody Harrelson, the rival FBI agent, puts in a similarly enjoyable performance, and his inept bumblings around the island create some unexpected comic situations between the cop and the thief. It's the relationship between these two (and the compromising situations they find themselves in) that makes the film, as they antagonize each other and almost become buddies toward the end. Their encounters add something fresh and unexpected to the movie's simple formula and make it really entertaining.
Oh, and special mentions have to go out for Don Cheadle and Salma Hayek. Don's character is very funny, and he plays both sides of it well, and as for Salma...let's just say the directors are aware of what their male audience wants to see.
All in all, it's funny, quick, easy to follow, and contains enough little quirks to make After the Sunset an enjoyable and entertaining experience.
After the Sunset is a mess, but it's a breezy, fun mess.
