The plague caused by the war has killed everyone else except for a few hundred deformed, nocturnal people calling themselves "The Family". The plague has caused them to become sensitive to light, as well as homicidally psychotic. They believe science and technology to be the cause of the war and their punishment, and Neville, as the last symbol of science, the old world, and a "user of the wheel", must die. Neville, using electricity, machinery, and science attempts to hold them at bay.Anyone who saw this growing up has a soft spot in their hearts for it. I've encountered enough people over the course of my 41 yrs who perk up at the mention of it to be aware of its place in a lot of our memories. This has been satirized on the Simpsons, which proves it has embedded itself in the national pop culture consciousness. Anyone who has read the book its based on, the incredible "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson, knows that this film has very little in common with it beyond its initial premise--and even that is not followed too closely. All of the criticisms of THE OMEGA MAN are valid: it is very dated and not at all scary or intense and some of the stunts and special effects are laughably, ludicrously cheesy. The villains--who should have been more terrifying than even Romero's zombies--are just crazed albino hippie Luddites and the last half of the film, once Chuck hooks up with Rosalind Cash and the kiddies, is really a let down. But the scenes that open the film of Heston hefting a cool-looking submachine gun while decked out in Austin Powers-style finery staring in angst at an old calendar or losing his mind for a moment hallucinating the sound of telephones ringing in the deserted city still pack a punch. This was the second movie, after 1959's THE WORLD,THE FLESH, AND THE DEVIL, to successfully pull off the eerie effect of being the last living human being in a huge empty city. Both films established the visual motif of streets filled with blowing waves of newspapers and swirling trash.After years of seeing this on TV -- a guaranteed late September or early October event every year for a few years on the local TV station during my Pacific Northwest childhood in the old Dark Age before cable TV and the videocassette revolution, its nice to see this movie on DVD with a beautiful widescreen transfer. It looks and sounds great. As a child I always liked the music, particularly the "surprise party" theme that plays when the villains make their first appearance. It rocks here in all its xylophone and funky electric organ and horns glory!Omega man is a decent copy of 1964 "The last man on earth" black and white movie with Vincent Price, now starring Charlton Heston.
This movie is about a medical colonel working with they US army when a plague hits the world as the China and USSR are sending bacteriological missiles at each other. He found a vaccine and is the only one who can benefits from it. He fought two years after that , the victims of the disease who are now trying to "purify" the earth of the old fashion humanity.
As with almost all movies made with the NRA president and spokesman, there is guns and shooting involved, to kill the "vampires".
The script holds together, and is realistic in a tactical way. It is not, in a technological or survival way.
To see if you are a fan of the "something terrible happened" genre.Badly dated and clumsily allegorical, The Omega Man has some fairly interesting moments, the most memorable being the view of a devastated, empty downtown Los Angeles.Following the use of germ warfare in a 1975 apocalyptic war between China and the Soviet Union, a plague has wiped out most of the human race, killing everyone except a "family" of deformed, light-sensitive, albino mutants, led by former newscaster Jonathan Matthias (Anthony Zerbe), In Los Angeles, another survivor, U.S. Army Colonel Robert Neville (Charlton Heston), who previously immunized himself with an experimental vaccine and now finds that he is immune to the plague, struggles to find a cure while attempting to stay alive against the constant nighttime attacks of the family, who are hellbent on destroying all remnants of the prior science- and technology-driven civilization that led to the holocaust, ...especially Neville. The Omega Man is based on the 1954 novel, I am Legend, by American author Richard Matheson. The novel was adapted for this film by screenwriters John and Joyce Corrington. The Omega Man is the second of three films to be based on Matheson's novel, preceded by The Last Man on Earth (1964) (1964) and followed by I Am Legend (2007) (2007). Omega (Ω or ω) is the last letter of the Greek alphabet. Because of its position in the alphabet, it is often used to denote the last or the end, in contrast to Alpha, the first or the beginning of the Greek alphabet. In the case of the film title, Omega indicates that Robert Neville is the last remaining human on earth. It is an infrared lamp. The gun is equipped with an early nightvision scope that detects infrared light projected by this lightsource and reflected by the objects. Preparing the leave Los Angeles, Neville returns to his apartment to pick up Lisa only to find that she has turned and brought the family with her. Neville is captured and made to watch while the family destroys everything in his apartment. Neville breaks free of his captors, grabs the bottle of blood from his refrigerator, and escapes, taking Lisa with him. Although it is still dark, they run outside. Matthias calls to Lisa, and Neville tries to shoot him, but his gun jams. Noticing Zachary's spear near his feet, Matthias picks it up and hurls it at Neville, severely wounding him in the middle of his chest and sending him reeling backwards into a fountain. Bleeding profusely, Neville calls to Lisa for help, but she collapses on the ground, unable to break her bond with the family. After the sun has risen, Dutch (Paul Koslo) and the children arrive to pick up Neville and Lisa. Dutch finds Neville hanging onto the fountain, the water red with his blood. Wordlessly, Neville gives Dutch the bottle of his blood. With his dying breath, he whispers, "Lisa". Dutch lifts Lisa from the ground and places her in the truck. "Well, let's move, kids", he says, "We've got a long way to go." In the final scene, one of the children fetches Neville's cap from the water and lays it respectfully on the side of the fountain. The camera then pans to Neville, revealing him hanging from the fountain in a manner similar to that of Christ on the cross. No. Matthias does not appear in Richard Matheson's original novel.
