According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the need for civil and environmental engineers is expected to increase 24 to 31 percent from 2008 to 2018. This is good news for engineers with civil or environmental bachelor's degrees. Although engineers typically need a four year degree to start their careers, environmental and civil master's degree programs can propel people beyond the entry-level positions. For example, graduate training is vital for people interested in engineering faculty research and high-level executive positions.
The Northeastern University College of Engineering
The Northeastern University College of Engineering has an environmental and civil master's degree program that individuals can do on full-time or part-time bases. The university prepares its students for technical positions in a variety of places such as educational institutions, government agencies and research laboratories. Also, all students are required to meet with their faculty advisor during their first semester to plan their course sequence. Students have the choice between graduating with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering or without a specification.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers its students environmental and civil engineering master's degree programs. In addition to environmental and civil engineering majors, the university also provides opportunities to specialize in areas such as computational science or energy and sustainability. The number of credits students need to graduate depends on which course of study they take. For instance, the non-thesis option takes 36 credits to complete. However, only 32 credits are needed if students elect to take the thesis option. Educational requirements to enter the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Graduate College include a bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of engineering study, at least a 3.00 grade point average during their undergraduate study and GRE scores.
The Villanova University's College of Engineering
Villanova University’s College of Engineering offer students the opportunity to earn an online civil and environmental engineering master's degree. Students can earn two master's degrees at one time depending on their undergraduate degree, according to Villanova University. Individuals who do not have a bachelor's degree in engineering can still apply. If accepted, they will have to take specific engineering undergraduate courses to make up for any deficiencies. In addition to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college, individuals need at least a 3.0 grade point average and high GRE scores to apply. Once accepted, students take courses according to even or odd years. For instance, as of 2010, the classes for that fall included Microbiology and Business Basics for Engineers.
