The Martians unchain a direct assault to our planet, with hundreds of invulnerable ships. The invasion takes place all over the world, and all the major cities are destroyed one after one--even the atomic bomb can't stop them. But if the humans can't beat them, who can? Maybe something MUCH smaller....
It's the 20th century and, to the unsuspecting human population, Martians are appearing on Earth with destruction on their mind. While everyone panics, Dr. Clayton Forrester and Sylvia Van Buren join together in hiding out away from all the mayhem.
This is a story based on the famous British science fiction writer H G Wells' novel. H G Wells' depiction of the "machines" were cylinders with tripod legs like the one shown on the more recent remake of this movie, but in this movie it's a streamlined saucer shape. I think this version is far better looking than the one done recently. And for some reason, I also feel that this 1953 classic is more realistic than the CGI ridden 2005 version. The two movies are separated by 50 years of technical development, and this says a lot about the quality of this movie.
Acting is top notch, and there are more first contact with the aliens scenario in this one than the recent remake, which makes for a more interesting screen play. In my opinion, it's also the best of '50s alien invasion movies which there were many. A true classic that stands after 50 years in its genre. Recently remastered DVD is of very high quality, and is a worth while addition to your collection.
Take the original War of the Worlds story and set it in the 1950's. A difficult task, but one that this film does and does admirably well. The effects were (for the time) groundbreaking, and I liked the fact that the movie-makers at least made an effort to depict the unusual alien nature of the invaders as well as the hopeless efforts of mankind's best technology. Though not as poignant, the parallel is made between the ironclad Thunderchild - the most advanced fighting machine made by man at the time, according to Wells - and the attempted use of nuclear weapons against the invaders... with basically the same results.
I would have liked to have seen more of the world the way it was depicted in both the original book and in the Mercury Theater radio translation in this film. Wandering through an empty, alien-haunted wilderness with the fading reminders of human civilization would have given it a wonderful surreal touch, but it would not have been really possible given the time - and the depicted feel - of this film.
Still a great sci-fi movie - a classic, and destined to remain that way. I hope the next version can at least live up to the impact of this classic.
Corona, California, about 50 miles south-southeast of Los Angeles proper. Corona is in Riverside County near where Interstate 15 and route 91 now interesect. Neither highway was there at the time: just the old US 395. Corona was mainly ranches, farms, and woods at the time.
