A fictional account of the sinking of the H.M.H.S. Britannic off the Greek island of Kea in November 1916. This explores the theory of a German Agent sabotaging the liner, a hospital ship.
Though its infamous sister ship has received most of the attention over the last ninety-five years, the Britannic met its end in a manner eerily similar to the ship of Titanic. A true story that has remained largely untold, the Britannic was one of largest passenger liners in the world when it sunk, and the circumstances surrounding its demise are just as mysterious as those of the Titanic, as it sustained damage almost identical to that of its sister ship. Though it has never been discovered exactly what caused the Britannic to sink, the film is based on historical evidence and imagines that the liner's demise was the doing of German spies on board the boat. Along with this, the film follows some serious problems that a budding romance between a young Briton and German brings on the couple, as their countries are in the midst of fighting WWI on opposing sides. Britannic, an historical drama, provides the first look of its kind at the little known story of this ill-fated ship.
The ship Britannic was made by the same building firm as the Titanic. After the T's sinking, improvements were made and better evacuation plans formulated. But, now its WW I time and the B has just been given a new task. It will be a medical ship and is ordered to the Greek islands to aid the soldiers in Gallipoli. Yet, British Naval commanders are still ill at ease. They suspect that a German spy may make his or her way on board and sabotage the vessel. For this reason, Brit Intelligence places its own operative, Vera (Amanda Hays) on board. This is odd because few women are given such a big job at this time but male agents are scarce. Vera is also an odd choice because she was on the Titanic, where she escaped death but her husband did NOT. Nevertheless, she agrees to pose as a nanny to Lady Lewis (Jacqueline Bisset) and keep en eye out. The captain makes it clear he resents having to follow a woman's demands. Very soon, he changes his mind, as Vera foils attempts to damage the ship and/ore fight mutiny by the Irish coal stokers, urged on by the unknown spy. Who is it? Meanwhile, Vera takes a shine to the ship's chaplain, Mr. Reynolds (Edward Atterton). He seems kind and returns her affection. But, gasp, could it be that he may be the actual spy? Once in the Aegean, peril is near as the ship is indeed torpedoed. How will it all end? This very intriguing movie, based on a little known ship or event, is entertaining to view. The two lovebird actors, Hays and Atterton, are very attractive and talented while Bisset and the rest of the supporting cast, do nice work, too. In addition, the period costumes, sets (mostly on board), and manners are likewise wonderful to behold. Add on a competent script and direction and most viewers will indeed be happy with the results. If you are drawn to romantic, historical dramas, you will be fascinated with Britannic.
My review of the plot of Britannic would only mirror other reviews, it's a good movie and does well with it's budget. It is a little to similar to Titanic for my liking in that there is unexpected romance aboard a large ship that sinks. It's still very watchable until right at the end when the ship actually sinks.
It switches from real footage of the characters to a computer animation of the ship sinking. The ship then topples over and sinks in all of about 10 seconds. The fact that it's animated couldn't be more obvious. It's such a let down, they coped well with the low budget throughout, then at the climax of it all they cheap out with some very nasty CGI.
