Thirty years after their final confrontation at the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, Johnny Lawrence is at rock-bottom as an unemployed handyman haunted by his wasted life. However, when Johnny rescues a bullied kid, Miguel, from bullies, he is inspired to restart the notorious Cobra Kai dojo. However, this revitalization of his life and related misunderstandings find Johnny restarting his old rivalry with Daniel LaRousso, a successful businessman who may be happily married, but is missing an essential balance in life since the death of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi. Meanwhile, even as this antipathy festers, it finds itself reflected in their protegees as Miguel and his comrades are gradually poisoned by Cobra Kai's thuggish philosophy. Meanwhile, while Daniel's daughter, Samantha, finds herself in the middle of this conflict amidst false friends, Johnny's estranged miscreant son, Robby, finds himself inadvertently coming under Daniel's wing and flourishes in ways worthy of Mr. Miyagi.
Set thirty years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, the series focuses on Johnny Lawrence reopening the Cobra Kai dojo, which causes his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso to be reignited.
I never planned to watch this show due to the cheesy trailer. But I'm so glad I watched it. It was amazingly and brilliantly made. I look forward to season 2!
I was constantly overwhelmed with nostalgia and emotion. This story hits home so well. The Best bad guys gotta be the bad guys you love, and painting a complex Johnny Lawrence, was the brilliant tv/film-making. This has been better than any television or movie I have watched in awhile. I just can't imagine how they can top this in season 2. The setups for season 2 felt forced and out of place though.
The story: 10/10 the depth & drama reflects not only the depth of today's society, but a compassion for the an old way of thinking when people were racists and stereotypical, which didn't always necessarily mean the worst of people. In today's society people who find themselves in that category are often reviled by the media, but we forget they are people too with a story that made them that way. In a way I think the lack of compassion and understanding by our society caused the resurgence of such thinking, which is reflected in the President we have. But there's a clever lesson behind that too as Johnny grows, and you see that some of the things he thinks he stereotypes negatively become the opposite of what he expected.
The acting and casting: There is an array of characters and it seems like casting could have let up and chosen some so-so actors and gotten away with it, but just about every character pulled me in. From Lip a bullied side character with a birth defect who seemed initially insignificant, as well as Aisha another side story that could have received less treatment, to Miguel the vulnerable top student at Cobra Kai with the same poor background as Daniel who pivotally makes us believe easily how and why he looks up to Sensei Lawrence, to Daniel LaRusso's strong in heart and mind beautiful daughter who knows who she is, and Robby Keen Johnny Lawrence's initially misfit juvenile delinquent rebel son who becomes a more brooding and insightful with his growth, to several other cool characters. The casting and acting are superb.
The Bad: There's not much to say about that outside of my initial comment about the 2nd season setups. Was so good I'm in the middle of medical school and took time off to binge watch this.
