An amusement park for rich vacationers. The park provides its customers a way to live out their fantasies through the use of robots that provide anything they want. Two of the vacationers choose a wild west adventure. However, after a computer breakdown, they find that they are now being stalked by a rogue robot gun-slinger.
A robot malfunction creates havoc and terror for unsuspecting vacationers at a futuristic, adult-themed amusement park.
Recap: Peter and John are two friends who's going on a really special vacation. They're going to one of Delos amusement parks. Delos has a brand new concept of theme parks, RomanWorld, CastleWorld and WestWorld, staffed by extremely real looking robots. For just a thousand dollars a day you can experience any one of those periods of time, just like it was. Supposedly harmless and safe, management is worried by the increasing number of malfunctions among the robots. Finally the robots go totally crazy and the dream vacation turn into a horrible nightmare.
Comments: A sci-fi comedy that gradually turns into a thriller but overall is pretty harmless fun. I found it entertaining and the genre shifting, something that can be tricky, didn't bother me at all. However, that may be because it is somewhat hard to really take seriously. There are just too many plot holes left unanswered. But it is still consistent enough to be entertaining.
Yul Brunner is the lead name, but not the lead character, which is played by Richard Benjamin supported mainly by James Brolin. But it is Brunner and his Gunslinger character that has left the biggest mark on time. Supposedly the Gunslinger was partly inspiring to Schwarzenegger's Terminator and the movie has been spoofed by the Simpsons. I'm not sure I was that impressed, as it is supposed to be a stiff character, but he does it well.
And now there is a rumor that it will be remade in 2012, I wonder who will carry that legacy. But I don't doubt there is room for improvement. It is a good story, and with overwhelmingly better special and CGI effects, it could be something special in the right hands. The effects in the original isn't bad, it never disturbed me, but let's face it. It was made in the early seventies.

While this idea was first done (as far as I know) in a Star Trek episode, the premise is good, and the execution is highly enjoyable.
Westworld is a robotic theme park, where your fantasies become a reality, but something is awry.
Fine performance by Yul Brynner, excellent direction, and some great Western stylized dialog make this highly enjoyable. I do hope they look to the Destry remake with Audie Murphy, when remaking this one in 2008 (2009 release).
This is a must see for any western, science fiction, or action fan, but it is also a must see for those who are fans of classic cinema. This work demonstrates a greatness which belies its "B" quality, low budget, and otherwise under-rated status.
All in all, this is some GREAT cinema, and as such, it rates an 8.4/10 from...

Crichton the director seems to have had more fun with the film than Crichton the writer, whose screenplay can offer us no better explanation for the sudden, bloody robot rebellion than an epidemic of "central mechanism psychosis."
It could have been a prototype test for future models.
Or the scientist/mechanic could have been one of the machines that was self-aware and built the robots as was mentioned by the scientists. a5c7b9f00b
