An Egyptologist returns from the dead to take revenge on those who have violated his tomb.
On his death bed, Egyptologist Professor Henry Morlant orders his servant to wrap a valuable jewel in his hand and place a statue of Anubis along with his body in the family crypt. His hope is that Anubis will accept the diamond and allow Morlant to pass through to the afterlife. When someone steals the jewel from his tomb, Morlant rises from the dead just as he predicted he would and seeks his revenge. The heirs to his estate, Ralph Morlant and his cousin Betty Harlon and her friend Miss Kaney arrive at the estate just as their uncle rises from his grave. With the assistant of the butler, the local minister Nigel Hartley, the elder Morlants solicitor Mr. Broughton and an Egyptian, Aga Ben Dragore, they try to make sense of what is happening and determine who among them has stolen the jewel.
In his quest for the 'eternal light', Professor Henry Morlant (Boris Karloff) dies with a fabled jewel granting immortality wrapped into his clutched fist before he expires. Subsequently, the jewel becomes the target of an assortment of thieves who desire it for their own purposes. "The Ghoul" is a dark and atmospheric early talkie horror flick from Britain, one of those films that aficionados of the genre say is a must see. The picture has it's moments, and Karloff fans, myself included, will raise an eyebrow over that ghastly self mutilation scene after his character returns from the dead. What takes away from the picture somewhat is the inclusion of an unnecessary gimmick involving a secondary character, Miss Kaney (Kathleen Harrison), who's starry eyed over an Egyptian opportunist, Aga Ben Dragore (Harold Huth). Dragore's also after the eternal light bauble, and I was wondering if he might dispatch her out of desperation at some moment.
I've been waiting to see this film for some time, and reading other reviews on this board make me realize why it's been a rare treat up till now. The picture showed up on Turner Classic this morning and it turned out to be worth the wait. Perhaps a bit dark in spots, the story is a good one given it's era, and Karloff fans should be reasonably pleased. One will note that he often gives his character a pacing that recalls his Frankenstein Monster, along with a bit of The Mummy without the bandages.
I can't understand the many tepid or negative reviews of this early British horror picture. Perhaps the reviewers saw a badly cut or duplicated print. Otherwise how could they have such a hard time following the plot? I watched it on TCM and it looked great, and the plot was fairly clear-cut.
In my opinion, this film has more in common with British mystery novels than with horror pictures. The focus is not so much on Boris Karloff and his creepy makeup, but on the pursuit of the missing jewel. The script contains the kind of cast list that would appear in an Agatha Christie novel, with the same light touch of humor (most of which comes from the great Kathleen Harrison), and deft plot turns. There are a couple of good surprises at the end, and everything is tied up neatly.
The cinematography and set direction are moody and evocative, and the Wagnerian soundtrack adds to the eerie mood. If you are expecting a standard monster pic, you will be disappointed. If you enjoy old British mysteries, you may find this to be a gem.
