Here's a very reliable opening build: Slinger -> Builder -> Slinger -> Settler. From there, keep cranking out slingers/archers and conquer your nearest neighbor, maybe a couple city states. To take on a civ, you'll want 5-8ish archers and 2-3 warriors, but you can get started on a city state with just 3-4 archers.

Ranged units deal damage without taking any, and that, in addition to their range, helps you have a huge impact in war.
