After his wife is assaulted, a husband enlists the services of a vigilante group to help him settle the score. Then he discovers they want a 'favor' from him in return.
In New Orleans, English teacher of the high school Rampart High, Will Gerard, and his wife, musician Laura Gerard, are in love with each other. One night, Laura leaves a rehearsal and is assaulted, while Will is playing chess with his friend Jimmy. Will is visiting her in hospital when, out of the blue, a stranger named Simon tells him that he belongs to an organization of vigilantes and offers to eliminate the assailant. In return, the organisation would want a favor from Will in the future. Will agrees, and the criminal is murdered. Six months later, Simon collects his debt with Will. He demands that Will kill Alan Marsh, a pedophile. Will accidentally kills Alan and soon he learns that the victim was an awarded journalist that was investigating the organization. Now he seeks evidences to prove his innocence but the network of the organization is powerful and is seeking Will out to eliminate him.
Early on you'll ask yourself if this is really a Nicolas Cage movie, the acting seems less than what we expect from everyone, the camera angles and music don't always fit the scene, but the story keeps you following to the end. And it's a great plot that gets more complicated and leaves the viewer more curious, not less. There is some violence, but they limited the gore and kept the level of suspense high throughout. But in many scenes you feel there could have been a better element that would have made it a great scene. I would recommend the movie, just know it obviously didn't make the cut somewhere because I had not heard of the title until seeing on the Redbox rack. What a shame, even if marketed well, this would be a well received movie with the same issues, but it would have made more money for everyone. Now go rent it.
I went in not expecting much but it was actually an enjoyable movie. It hits on a few different levels. Besides being an action flick, it makes you consider what would you do in a similar situation. The movie has some solid actors and I'm surprised that this movie wasn't in theaters, even on a a limited basis. Nicholas Cage is actually does fairly well along with most others. January Jones does OK, not sure about her acting skills yet. Some stuff I've seen she's been good in, others she's been just OK; such as this movie. The movie explores some deeper morality issues that goes into the possible consequences. All in all the movie is definitely worth a viewing.
To paraphrase a famous Mae West wisecrack, when Cage is good, he's very good, and when he's bad, he's better. Here, however, he's just plain lousy, and like the film he so passively carries, that's no fun at all.
