The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj" aspiring to yoke, be a part of or unite. It implies the merging together of all the essential aspects of an individual namely- the body, the mind and the soul- to achieve content, balanced and useful lives which spiritually unite the individual with the supreme.
Yoga was founded by the Sages and the Rishis who had the courage to investigate the nature of man’s inner world. It was handed down from the “Sages" or the “Rishis" to their “Sisyaa" or students in the hope that it would help in the upliftment of mankind. The ultimate aim of yoga is to attain ultimate freedom- the breaking free from the shackles of cause effects which tie us to continual reincarnation.
The basic of Raja Yoga is soul-consciousness which means considering one’s true self as immortal soul having eternal relationship with the supreme soul and the disciplines of a yogic lifestyle, are clearly described in the ‘GITA’. The Gita describes the essence of Raja yoga as mental communion with God: man-mana bhava; sarva –dharma parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja.
Raja yoga is easy to practice. Everyone in a family including elders and children can practice this. The aim of this union with the supreme is to become like him in his qualities. As souls, we have similar attributes as God. As God’s children, we human souls are innately good and pure; peace, truth, love and bliss are our innate nature.
